Guardians beat Yankees with 3-run rally in 10th

Andres Gimenez’s walk-off sacrifice fly capped a three-run 10th inning and sent the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-7 win over the visiting New York Yankees on Sunday. After Anthony Rizzo put New York up 7-5 with a two-run single in the top of the inning off Tyler Beede (1-0), the Yankees’ Caleb Ferguson (0-2) couldn’t hold the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Cleveland placement runner Bo Naylor scored on a fielder’s choice and brother Josh came home with the tying run when second baseman Gleyber Torres bobbled a grounder and threw late to the plate. Then with runners on first and third, Gimenez lined a fly ball to right field that was plenty long to score David Fry and keep the Guardians from being swept in the three-game set.

Cleveland trailed 3-0 after Aaron Judge’s three-run homer in the third but got back into the game on Jose Ramirez’s two-run homer in the bottom of that frame.

Orioles 6, Brewers 4

Jackson Holliday picked up his first major league hit as part of a two-run seventh inning and the Baltimore Orioles rallied past the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Colton Cowser added his fourth home run in four games to provide an eighth-inning insurance run.

Cedric Mullins and Ryan O’Hearn also homered for the Orioles, who salvaged the finale and have not been swept in 96 series dating back to May 2022. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his third save.

Blake Perkins had three hits including a homer, and William Contreras also homered for the Brewers, who had won four straight, but went 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

Cubs 3, Mariners 2

Michael Busch homered for a fourth consecutiv­e game and Javier Assad pitched 52⁄3 solid innings as the Chicago Cubs defeated the host Seattle Mariners.

Seiya Suzuki went 2-for-4 with a double as Chicago took two of three games in the interleagu­e series.

Jorge Polanco slugged a two-run homer for the Mariners. Mariners ace Luis Castillo (0-4) put together his first quality start of the season, but it wasn’t quite enough. The right-hander went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Red Sox 5, Angels 4

Tyler O’Neill, Triston Casas and Masataka Yoshida all homered and the Boston Red Sox held on for a win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

O’Neill and Connor Wong each had two hits while Yoshida drove in a pair of runs as the Red Sox managed their second straight win.

After Logan O’Hoppe was hit by a pitch, a Mickey Moniak bloop single and Zach Neto walk loaded the bases in the ninth. Anthony Rendon then smacked a sacrifice fly to center to pull Los Angeles within 5-4. Rendon and Brandon Drury each had two hits and an RBI for the Angels.

Pirates 9, Phillies 2

Jack Suwinski hit a go-ahead grand slam and Andrew McCutchen belted his 300th career home run to power the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates past the Philadelph­ia Phillies.

Pittsburgh trailed 2-1 entering the sixth inning before Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on Alec Bohm’s error, Rowdy Tellez walked and McCutchen singled to load the bases with nobody out. Suwinski then put Zack Wheeler’s 0-1 curveball into the right-center-field seats for his second career grand slam, putting the Pirates up 5-2.

Trea Turner led Philadelph­ia with three hits, including his first home run of the season, which put the Phillies ahead 1-0 in the third inning. Brandon Marsh went 1-for-4 with a triple.

Blue Jays 5, Rockies 0

Right-hander Jose Berrios continued his stellar start to the season as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Colorado Rockies. In his fourth start of the season, Berrios (3-0, 1.05 ERA) allowed only two hits, struck out seven, walked two and hit two batters.

Justin Turner had two singles and a double in going 3-for-4 with three RBIs as the Blue Jays won the rubber match of the three-game series.

Colorado left-hander Kyle Freeland (0-3) allowed four runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings.

Tigers 4, Twins 3

Spencer Torkelson’s go-ahead single capped a four-run eighth as the host Detroit Tigers rallied for a win over the Minnesota Twins.

Javier Baez hit his first homer of the season and Mark Canha supplied a tworun double for Tigers, who split the fourgame series with their Central Division rival.

Twins starter Bailey Ober tossed six scoreless innings. Griffin Jax (1-1) was charged with the final run and took the loss. Christian Vazquez homered and Ryan Jeffers drove in the other two runs for the Twins.

Rays 9, Giants 4

Amed Rosario and Rene Pinto swatted home runs off San Francisco starter Blake Snell to spoil his return to the Tampa area, leading the Tampa Bay Rays by the Giants in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Rosario ripped a two-run shot to left in the first, while Pinto slugged a tworun rocket to center three innings later for a 7-1 lead against the team’s former star hurler.

A five-year member of the Rays which included his 2018 American League Cy Young-winning campaign, Snell (0-2) was battered for seven runs on six hits in four innings as his ERA rose to 12.86. He fanned four and walked two.

Braves 9, Marlins 7

Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 9-7 win over the Miami Marlins Sunday.

Ozuna finished 3-for-5 and drove in four runs, the final three coming on his seventh homer of the year, after Atlanta was down to its final strike against Marlins’ closer Tanner Scott (0-3).

Braves closer Raisel Iglesias then retired all three Miami batters in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his third save of the year.

A.J. Minter (2-1) earned the win after striking out three batters in a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.

Mets 2, Royals 1

Harrison Bader snapped a scoreless tie with an eighth-inning RBI single and four pitchers combined on a three-hitter for the host New York Mets, who beat the Kansas City Royals in the rubber game of a three-game interleagu­e series.

Pete Alonso led off the eighth by walking against Chris Stratton (1-1). Alonso went to second on a bunt by Tyrone Taylor before Francisco Alvarez flew out. Stratton then walked Jeff McNeil and Brett Baty before Bader legged out an infield single on a slow roller to third. Brandon Nimmo followed with a four-pitch walk to force home McNeil. Edwin Diaz notched his third save despite giving up a two-out homer to Vinny Pasquantin­o. Nimmo and Francisco Lindor each had two singles for the Mets. Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr. had the Royals’ other hits.

Reds 11, White Sox 4

Christian Encarnacio­n-Strand and Nick Martini belted two-run homers to lead the visiting Cincinnati Reds to a win and a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox.

Jake Fraley reached base four times on two hits and two walks and scored three runs for the Reds, who outscored the White Sox, 27-5, in their first-ever sweep of the White Sox in interleagu­e play. The White Sox fell to 2-13 on the season, the worst 15-game start in their 124-year history. The previous worst, set by the 1968 White Sox, who also started 2-12 but won their 15th game.

Astros 8, Rangers 5

Jose Altuve smacked two home runs as part of a three-hit game as the Houston Astros topped the Texas Rangers in the rubber match of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park.

Altuve drilled a pair of solo shots off Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi (1-1) for his 11th career multi-homer game. Altuve added a leadoff single in the seventh inning which kickstarte­d that three-run frame and resulted in his fourth three-hit game of the season. Altuve went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and clubbed his fourth and fifth homers in the first and third innings, respective­ly.

Rangers left fielder Evan Carter socked a home run with one out in the fourth that pulled Texas to within 2-1.

A’s 7, Nationals 6

Abraham Toro had a two-run single to cap a six-run sixth inning, helping the host Oakland Athletics overcome a fiverun deficit in a victory over the Washington Nationals. Oakland’s Lawrence Butler had an RBI single and joined JJ Bleday with three hits.

Tyler Nevin and Shea Langeliers each had an RBI single and Darell Hernaiz walked with the bases loaded for the Athletics, who won the three-game interleagu­e series. Oakland has won six of its last eight games after losing seven of its first eight to start the season.

Washington’s Lane Thomas belted a solo homer and had two RBI singles on Sunday.

He had been mired in a 1-for-17 rut with five strikeouts in his previous four games.

Diamondbac­ks 5, Cardinals 0

Zac Gallen improved to 3-0 and Christian Walker went 3 for 4 with a run in the Arizona Diamondbac­ks’ victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Phoenix. Arizona, also led by Corbin Carroll’s two RBIs and Jake McCarthy’s 2-for-3 performanc­e, won two of the three games in the series with St. Louis.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings with Opening Day starters on the mound – Gallen for the Diamondbac­ks and Miles Mikolas for the Cardinals.

Mikolas (1-2) faced the minimum of 12 batters in the first four innings and induced a double play in the bottom of the second after Walker led off the inning with a single.

Padres 6, Dodgers 3

Jurickson Profar drilled a three-run double in the seventh inning and the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers to win two of three in their weekend series.

The score was tied at 3 when Xander Bogaerts walked, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled and Jake Cronenwort­h walked to load the bases with no outs. After Manny Machado popped out, Profar ripped a high fastball from J.P. Feyereisen (0-1) off the top of the center-field wall to clear the bases.

Yuki Matsui (2-0) retired all four hitters he faced to pick up the win for San Diego, and Robert Suarez pitched the ninth to garner his fifth save in as many chances.
