Guardians capitalize on Red Sox’s miscues

-

Andres Gimenez collected two hits and drove in two runs to help the visiting Cleveland Guardians defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 Thursday in the tail end of a four-game series.

Carlos Carrasco (1-1) held Boston to two runs in 52⁄3 innings to earn the win. He gave up four hits, struck out five and walked three. Emmanuel Clase retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his fifth save as the Guardians won three games in the series.

Jarren Duran drove in two runs and scored twice for the Red Sox, who struck out 10 times.

Boston committed two errors that led to three unearned runs. The Red Sox have 20 errors in 20 games this season.

Cooper Criswell (0-1) surrendered four runs (one earned) on three hits in 21⁄3 innings of relief.

Duran gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when he walked, stole second, moved to third on Triston Casas’ infield single and scored on Wilyer Abreu’s fielder’s choice.

Cleveland tied the game in the third on an RBI single from Gimenez that scored Gabriel Arias, then took a 2-1 lead on Josh Naylor’s single that drove in David Fry in the fourth.

Rangers 9, Tigers 7

Jonah Heim hit a two-run home run, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia delivered solo shots and visiting Texas topped Detroit.

Semien had three hits and scored twice for Texas, which won the series 3-1. The teams combined for 24 hits, 13 by the Rangers.

Texas starter Jack Leiter, the No. 2 pick of the 2021 draft, allowed seven runs in 32⁄3 innings in his major league debut. Jose Leclerc (1-2) picked up the win in relief and Kirby Yates notched his second save.

With the game tied 7-7 in the eighth, Leody Taveras hit a one-out double, reached third in a botched rundown and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice. Taveras added an RBI single in the ninth.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was ejected in the eighth for arguing a call.

Kerry Carpenter drove in two runs for the Tigers, while Riley Greene had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Detroit starter Kenta Maeda gave up six runs (five earned) in 22⁄3 innings.

Rays 2, Angels 1

Hot-hitting Amed Rosario went 2for-4 with a triple, Ryan Pepiot fired six strong innings and Tampa Bay managed a split of its four-game series against visiting Los Angeles.

Batting third in the lineup, Rosario produced his big hit in the first inning, tripling in a run and then scoring on a sacrifice fly. The offseason acquisition increased his hitting streak to 10 games and boosted his average to .339.

Yandy Diaz was 2-for-4 and Richie Palacios singled and scored as the Rays had just five hits.

Pepiot (2-2) yielded just one run on three hits and three walks. He fanned seven over 92 pitches.

The Rays won the seven-game season series 4-3.

For the Angels, Mike Trout went 0for-3 but stole two bases and scored. Miguel Sano singled, walked and had an RBI. Luis Rengifo had two hits.

Giants 5, Diamondbacks 0

Logan Webb allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings as San Francisco opened a four-game home series against Arizona with a victory.

Pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores broke open a tight game with a two-run double in the eighth.

LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Mike Yastrzemski capped a fourrun eighth with a two-run single, helping the Giants win a second straight game for the second time this season.

Webb was the star of the show after getting off to a rocky start in which he served up game-opening singles to Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll.

The right-hander escaped damage by retiring the next three men he faced, stranding Marte at third, before setting down the Diamondbacks in order until issuing a one-out walk to Christian Walker in the seventh.

Walker was quickly erased on a pickoff, and after Webb got Eugenio Suarez to ground out to third, he was done for the night, having walked one and struck out five.
