Memorial May Specials

Smithsonia­n Channel, beginning at 8 p.m.

This three-hour block of specials features 100 Missions: Surviving Vietnam,

tracking the stories of the pilots of Operation Rolling Thunder and their race to survive their 100-mission goal; Gun Trucks of Vietnam, celebratin­g the U.S. Army gun truckers who scavenge parts and weapons to turn these unarmed trucks into five-ton killing machines during the war; and The Spy in the Hanoi Hilton, telling the story of James Stockdale and his fellow prisoners at the notorious “Hanoi Hilton.” Their clandestin­e communicat­ions with U.S. intelligen­ce alerted the CIA and Pentagon to the horrors of the Vietnamese POW camps and prompted a daring, top-secret rescue mission.

TCM, beginning at 8 p.m.

Puppeteer/voice actor/filmmaker Frank Oz, most associated with his Muppets and work, turns 80 this week (he was born Frank Richard Oznowicz in England on May 25, 1944). Ahead of his big day, Turner Classic Movies offers a double feature of movies directed by Oz. First is The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), the third Muppets feature film. In addition to directing, Oz also cowrote the movie and served as puppeteer and voice for his usual roster of characters, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Sam Eagle, among others. Following that is the Oscar-nominated Little Shop of Horrors (1986), an adaptation of the Alan Menken and Howard Ashman 1982 off-Broadway musical,
