Gil, Soto carry Yankees past the White Sox

-

Luis Gil struck out a career-high 14 batters, Juan Soto went 4-for-4 with two home runs and the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to a season-high six games with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Saturday afternoon.

It was the 18th multi-homer game of Soto’s career and his first with the Yankees. Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run, doubled and drove in two runs and Jose Trevino also homered for New York, which improved to 15-6 at home.

Gill (5-1) became the 11th pitcher in Yankees history to strike out at least 14 batters in a regular-season game. He also set a franchise rookie record, breaking the mark of 13 strikeouts set by Orlando Hernandez in 1998.

At the outset, Gil had to overcome a 29-pitch first inning that saw him allow three hits, including a bloop RBI double down the left field line by Andrew Benintendi. He also allowed a walk before striking out Korey Lee to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Gil struck out seven batters in a row between the fourth and sixth innings, just one off the team record of eight in a row set by Ron Davis on May 4, 1981. Gil left after allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings to win his fourth consecutive start.

Giants 14, Rockies 4

Matt Chapman and Luis Matos continued their two-man demolition of Colorado, combining for seven hits, six runs and six RBIs to lead host San Francisco to a victory.

Pushed back a day to get additional rest, Kyle Harrison (4-1) took advantage of his team’s biggest offensive outburst of the season to coast through five innings and guide the Giants to their third straight win.

The hosts wasted no time jumping on ex-Giants left-hander Ty Blach (1-2) for three runs in the first. Chapman kept the inning alive with a two-out double before Matos smacked his second home run of the season, a three-run shot.

The Giants never trailed, adding two in the second and single runs in the third, sixth and seventh before blowing the game open with six in the eighth.

Chapman and Matos teamed in the third with a single and run-scoring double, respectively. Chapman doubled in the seventh and scored on a single by Heliot Ramos.

Marlins 10, Mets 9, 10 innings

Host Miami, which scored four runs in the ninth to tie the score, beat New York on Otto Lopez’s 10th-inning RBI single.

Trailing 9-5 entering the ninth against two-time All-Star closer Edwin Diaz, the Marlins got an RBI single from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Josh Bell’s gametying three-run homer to center.

Lopez’s single scored plated runner Christian Bethancourt in the 10th.

Chisholm went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. He had a solo homer and a pair of RBI singles.

Bell went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0

Christopher Morel hit a walk-off single to score Cody Bellinger from second base in the bottom of the ninth inning as Chicago beat visiting Pittsburgh.

Bellinger hit a ground-rule double with one out against David Bednar (2-3) and slid home safely ahead of the tag by catcher Joey Bart on Morel’s single to center field. The call was confirmed after review.

Bellinger had two hits for Chicago, which had lost the first two games of the four-game series. Hector Neris (4-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the win.

The dramatic finish followed a dynamic pitchers’ duel between the Cubs’ Shota Imanaga and the Pirates’ Bailey Falter.

Falter needed just 60 pitches to get through the first six innings, and only two Cubs batters reached base during that stretch.

Rays 5, Blue Jays 4

Jonny DeLuca hit a go-ahead tworun home run in the eighth inning and visiting Tampa Bay rallied to defeat Toronto.

The Rays, who trailed 4-0, have won the first two of the three-game series.

Yandy Diaz had three hits and two walks for the Rays, who have won four in a row.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits and an RBI for the Blue Jays. Starter Kevin Gausman allowed three runs, eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings.

James McArthur allowed two singles to start the ninth before retiring the next three batters to convert his 11th save in 14 chances.

Lugo (7-1) surrendered two runs on six hits and tallied double-digit strikeouts for the second straight start. He recorded a career-high 12 punchouts last Sunday.

Seth Brown hit a two-run home run, while Abraham Toro, Brent Rooker and Max Schuemann had two hits apiece as Oakland lost its season-high seventh straight game.

Phillies 4, Nationals 3, 10 innings

Bryce Harper drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly and Philadelphia beat visiting Washington in 10 innings.

The Nationals intentionally walked Kyle Schwarber to put runners on first and second with no outs in the 10th, and Whit Merrifield pinch-ran for Schwarber. J.T. Realmuto flied out to center, and Johan Rojas, who started the inning on second, moved to third on the play. Harper then sent a ball to left-center to score Rojas.

Bryson Stott and Kody Clemens homered for the Phillies, who have won five of their past six games.

CJ Abrams and Ildemaro Vargas each had three hits for the Nationals, who have lost four straight.

Gregory Soto (1-1) pitched one inning for the win. Kyle Finnegan (1-3) took the loss.

Mariners 4, Orioles 3

Seattle’s Cal Raleigh and Dylan Moore hit run-scoring doubles in the eighth inning as the Mariners’ bats got going late for a victory against host Baltimore.

The Mariners didn’t have a hit until the sixth inning but they finished with seven, including two apiece for Julio Rodriguez and Moore.

Baltimore’s Grayson Rodriguez pitched six innings in his first game back from the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, but his start went to waste when the Mariners struck for two runs as soon as he was out of the game.

Grayson Rodriguez surrendered only Julio Rodriguez’s infield single in the sixth. He struck out Mitch Garver with runners on the corners to end his stint.

Ryne Stanek (2-0) picked up the victory with two-thirds innings of relief, and Andres Munoz gave up Gunnar Henderson’s solo home run with two outs in the ninth on the way to his eighth save.

Brewers 4, Astros 2

William Contreras capped a four-run fifth inning with a three-run home run that propelled visiting Milwaukee over Houston.

Contreras, who entered Saturday ranked second in the National League in runs (39) and batting average (.353), extended his on-base streak to 25 games by prevailing in an epic confrontation with Astros veteran right-hander Justin Verlander (2-2).

Contreras fouled off seven consecutive pitches – including four successive four-seam fastballs – before launching the 13th pitch of his at-bat 428 feet. His seventh homer of the season plated Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio with two outs and gave the Brewers a 4-1 lead.

Verlander retired the Brewers in order in the first, second and fourth innings and had 56 pitches on his ledger entering the fifth. But Milwaukee made him labor in that inning, starting with a leadoff single from Joey Ortiz before Frelick and Chourio worked back-toback walks. Blake Perkins followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Ortiz and knotted the score at 1-1.

Contreras delivered the knockout blow two batters later. Verlander allowed four runs on four hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts over 42⁄3 innings. He finished with 98 pitches, 42 in the fifth.

JoJo Romero (1-0), the third of four St. Louis relievers, earned the victory.

Dodgers 4, Reds 0

Walker Buehler pitched six scoreless innings in his third start in nearly two years, Freddie Freeman had an RBI and two runs, and Los Angeles earned a victory over visiting Cincinnati.

Buehler (1-1) gave up three hits over six innings with no walks and seven strikeouts as he earned a win for the first time since May 24, 2022. He made just three more starts that season before undergoing his second Tommy John surgery and enduring a lengthy rehab process.

Freeman batted second for Los Angeles while Shohei Ohtani was moved into the leadoff spot as Mookie Betts was given a rare day off. Ohtani went 0for-4.

Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-3) gave up just three hits but also allowed three walks as the Dodgers cashed in for three runs off the Cincinnati starter.

Jake Fraley had a triple, but the Reds finished with just three hits while falling to 3-9 on a 10-game, three-city road trip.

Rangers 3, Angels 2, 13 innings

Travis Jankowski scored the winning run in the 13th inning as Texas rallied for a win against visiting Los Angeles.

After Marcus Semien lined out to third, the Angels intentionally walked Corey Seager to load the bases. Reliever Carson Fulmer (0-2) hit Nathaniel Lowe on the shin with a first-pitch sinker, bringing Jankowski home.

Reliever Yerry Rodriguez (1-0) struck out one and walked one in two innings.

Corbin Carroll became the first Arizona baserunner when he led off the fourth with a triple. The Diamondbacks failed to bring him home as Flaherty struck out two of the next three batters, sandwiching a groundout.

Guardians 11, Twins 4

Tyler Freeman went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs as Cleveland handed visiting Minnesota its fifth straight loss.

Roughly 24 hours after his eighth-inning, tiebreaking homer sent Cleveland to a 3-2 victory in Friday’s series opener, Jose Ramirez capped a 12-pitch at-bat with a two-run homer off Minnesota starter Bailey Ober (4-2) in the first inning to set the tone.

Ramirez finished with three hits and three RBIs on Saturday.

Freeman’s leadoff single in the first kicked off his career night, which included a two-run single during a fourrun seventh for the Guardians, who have won five of their past six overall and are 12-3 in their past 15 home games.

Meanwhile, Cleveland starter Logan Allen (5-2) allowed five hits and a walk in six scoreless innings to further frustrate the Twins, who have been outscored 28-7 during their five-game slide. Allen struck out seven.
