Braves blank Padres to split doublehead­er

Chris Sale threw seven shutout innings to log his third straight scoreless start and the host Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Monday to earn a split of a doublehead­er while ending a four-game losing streak.

The Padres overcame a five-run deficit in the first game of the twin bill to defeat the Braves 6-5.

Sale (7-1) allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out nine in winning for the sixth straight time. He has covered 20 innings over his past three outings.

The losing pitcher was Randy Vasquez (0-3). He pitched a season-high six innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits to go along with no walks and two strikeouts.

In Game 1, Manny Machado’s tworun double completed a four-run eighth inning rally. The winning pitcher was Jhony Brito (1-2). Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless eighth and Robert Suarez worked a perfect ninth to earn his 13th save.

Atlanta scored twice in the first to take its first lead of the series, as Matt Olson and Michael Harris II both had RBI singles.

Red Sox 5, Rays 0

Rafael Devers set a Red Sox franchise record for consecutiv­e games with a home run in Boston’s series-opening win over the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

In the fourth inning, the third baseman wrote himself into the Red Sox record book with an opposite-field, tworun shot to left on a 97 mph four-seam fastball from Taj Bradley (1-2) for a 3-0 lead. It was his sixth straight game going deep, eclipsing the high mark most recently matched by Bobby Dalbec in 2020.

Yandy Diaz, Josh Lowe and Jose Caballero had singles as the Rays were blanked for the second time.

Marlins 3, Brewers 2, 10 innings

Josh Bell hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Milwaukee Brewers.

Miami’s Otto Lopez blooped an RBI single into right with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

Christian Yelich stole home for Milwaukee, which got its other run from Andruw Monasterio’s solo shot in the fifth.

Blue Jays 9, White Sox 3

Danny Jansen went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and five RBIs, Daulton Varsho also had a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Chicago White Sox.

Bo Bichette was 4-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI for Toronto in the opener of a three-game series.

Paul DeJong was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI single for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. Nicky Lopez also went 3-for-4.

Guardians 3, Mets 1

David Fry drove in two runs and scored the other as the Cleveland Guardians beat the visiting New York Mets for their fourth straight victory.

Fry delivered a two-run single in the first inning and came home on rookie Kyle Manzardo’s fourth-inning double for the American League Central-leading Guardians, who have won seven of eight overall and are amid a 14-3 home stretch.

Tylor Megill (0-2) returned from a shoulder issue suffered in his season debut March 31 to give New York five decent innings. Megill allowed three runs (two earned) to go with four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Nationals 12, Twins 3

Jesse Winker and Luis Garcia Jr. homered and the Washington Nationals snapped a five-game losing streak with a win against the visiting Minnesota Twins.

Eddie Rosario had two hits and drove in three runs for Washington, which has scored 17 runs over its past two games after totaling five in its previous four.

Carlos Correa went deep and Willi Castro had two hits for the Twins, who have lost seven straight.

Mariners 5, Yankees 4

Ty France hit a tiebreakin­g RBI single to cap a four-run ninth inning off Clay Holmes as the Seattle Mariners rallied for a victory over the host New York Yankees.

The Mariners stopped New York’s seven-game winning streak by scoring four times off Holmes (1-1), who blew his second save in 15 chances and surrendere­d earned runs for the first time this season.

Eduard Bazardo (1-0) allowed an RBI single to Jon Berti that pushed New York’s lead to 4-1 in the eighth inning but earned the win.

Royals 8, Tigers 3

Michael Massey went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and the Kansas City Royals scored six times in the sixth inning to pick up a win against the visiting Detroit Tigers in the opener of a threegame series.

Royals starter Michael Wacha (4-4) went seven frames, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Chris Stratton didn’t allow a hit in 11⁄3 scoreless innings for his third save.

Detroit got a run in the seventh. Kerry Carpenter led off with a double, moved to third on a one-out groundout by Spencer Torkelson and scored on Colt Keith’s double. Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Cardinals 6, Orioles 3

Micheal Siani drove in four runs to power the St. Louis Cardinals past the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Siani hit his first career homer, a three-run shot, and an RBI single as the Cardinals won for the sixth time in eight games.

Gunnar Henderson hit a three-run home run for the Orioles, running his homer streak to four games.

Angels 9, Astros 7

Nolan Schanuel and Logan O’Hoppe slugged three-run home runs as part of a seven-run fifth inning as the visiting Los Angeles Angels topped the Houston Astros.

Schanuel, O’Hoppe and Jo Adell – who went back-to-back with O’Hoppe with two outs in the fifth – all homered on the first pitch as the Angels dramatical­ly erased a five-run deficit against Astros starter Framber Valdez (3-2).

The Astros secured a 6-1 lead with a power surge of their own. Jose Altuve drilled a three-run home run, his ninth, off Angels starter Reid Detmers to cap a four-run second. Yainer Diaz singled home a run earlier in the frame.

Dodgers 6, Diamondbac­ks 4

Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam in a six-run third inning that included three home runs and the Los Angeles Dodgers earned a victory over the Arizona Diamondbac­ks.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-1) gave up two runs over 61⁄3 innings with eight strikeouts as the Dodgers won their fourth consecutiv­e game and improved to 3-1 against the Diamondbac­ks after they were swept out of the playoffs by their National League West rival last season.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Jake McCarthy hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning for the Diamondbac­ks, who are 4-6 since May 10.

Kevin Newman had three hits and an RBI for Arizona.
