West­land: Girl­friend slain, man charged

A West­land man was ar­raigned on a first-de­gree mur­der charge in 18th Dis­trict Court on Tues­day in the death of his long­time live-in girl­friend early Mon­day at their home in the 1500 block of Glo­ria. Ti­mothy Cata­lano, 45, al­legedly told po­lice he shot Tammy Susalla, 44, be­cause she planned to leave him for an­other man. She died Tues­day af­ter­noon. He said “his heart was bro­ken,” said West­land Po­lice Sgt. Steve Borisch. Po­lice were called about 1 a.m. Mon­day by the cou­ple’s 20-year-old daugh­ter. Cata­lano woke the daugh­ter af­ter the shoot­ing, then drove to his fa­ther’s house in Jack­son. Cata­lano al­legedly told his fa­ther he’d shot Susalla, and the fa­ther called Jack­son po­lice. A pre­lim­i­nary exam is sched­uled for 9 a.m. Sept. 6 in 18th Dis­trict Court in West­land.

Detroit: Man who beat se­nior gets prison

Deonte Bradley, 22, was sen­tenced Tues­day to 1530 years for car­jack­ing and 12-20 years for as­sault with in­tent to do bod­ily harm in the May 4 car­jack­ing and beat­ing of Leonard Sims, 91. The in­ci­dent in a park­ing lot was cap­tured on the se­cu­rity cam­era of the Shop N Go Liquor store in the 3200 block of McNi­chols and drew na­tional out­rage when the video was shown on television. Af­ter his ar­rest, Bradley told a Detroit po­lice of­fi­cer: “It wasn’t in­ten­tion­ally. It was just some­thing I did and it was stupid. I hit him a few times, got the keys and drove off.” Bradley apol­o­gized to Sims and his fam­ily be­fore he was sen­tenced.

Detroit: Bash to honor ex-coun­cil leader

Erma Henderson, who served on the Detroit City Coun­cil from 1973-89, will be hon­ored by about 250 peo­ple at a birth­day lun­cheon Fri­day. About a dozen speak­ers will give tributes to the for­mer coun­cil pres­i­dent, who turned 90 Aug. 20. The event is from noon un­til 2 p.m. at Cobo Cen­ter. Tick­ets, at $50, are still avail­able by call­ing Coun­cil­woman JoAnn Wat­son’s of­fice at (313) 224-4535. All the pro­ceeds will ben­e­fit Henderson.

Brown­stown Twp.: Dad sought in abuse

Po­lice are on the hunt for a man who al­legedly bit his 5-month-old daugh­ter. A war­rant has been is­sued for 23-year-old Ja­vante C. Beard for al­legedly bit­ing his daugh­ter on her cheeks and shoul­ders on Aug. 16. He also faces a charge as a fourth-de­gree ha­bit­ual of­fender. Po­lice say Beard is on the run and is a dan­ger to the com­mu­nity. He has al­legedly threat­ened the child’s mother and fam­ily, ac­cord­ing to po­lice.
