Westland: Girlfriend slain, man charged
A Westland man was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge in 18th District Court on Tuesday in the death of his longtime live-in girlfriend early Monday at their home in the 1500 block of Gloria. Timothy Catalano, 45, allegedly told police he shot Tammy Susalla, 44, because she planned to leave him for another man. She died Tuesday afternoon. He said “his heart was broken,” said Westland Police Sgt. Steve Borisch. Police were called about 1 a.m. Monday by the couple’s 20-year-old daughter. Catalano woke the daughter after the shooting, then drove to his father’s house in Jackson. Catalano allegedly told his father he’d shot Susalla, and the father called Jackson police. A preliminary exam is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 6 in 18th District Court in Westland.
Detroit: Man who beat senior gets prison
Deonte Bradley, 22, was sentenced Tuesday to 1530 years for carjacking and 12-20 years for assault with intent to do bodily harm in the May 4 carjacking and beating of Leonard Sims, 91. The incident in a parking lot was captured on the security camera of the Shop N Go Liquor store in the 3200 block of McNichols and drew national outrage when the video was shown on television. After his arrest, Bradley told a Detroit police officer: “It wasn’t intentionally. It was just something I did and it was stupid. I hit him a few times, got the keys and drove off.” Bradley apologized to Sims and his family before he was sentenced.
Detroit: Bash to honor ex-council leader
Erma Henderson, who served on the Detroit City Council from 1973-89, will be honored by about 250 people at a birthday luncheon Friday. About a dozen speakers will give tributes to the former council president, who turned 90 Aug. 20. The event is from noon until 2 p.m. at Cobo Center. Tickets, at $50, are still available by calling Councilwoman JoAnn Watson’s office at (313) 224-4535. All the proceeds will benefit Henderson.
Brownstown Twp.: Dad sought in abuse
Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly bit his 5-month-old daughter. A warrant has been issued for 23-year-old Javante C. Beard for allegedly biting his daughter on her cheeks and shoulders on Aug. 16. He also faces a charge as a fourth-degree habitual offender. Police say Beard is on the run and is a danger to the community. He has allegedly threatened the child’s mother and family, according to police.
