The Baltimore Gas and Electric company (BGE) on Monday granted Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School a Rising Star Award and a $500 for their participation in the Wires Down Video challenge.

“We were recognized as newcomers, it’s the first time we won,” said Janet Myers, a second grade teacher at Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School.

The contest requires that each school create their own version of BGE’s “Wires Down” TV commercial.

Participants can earn up to $10,000 for their school.

The goal is to teach students not to touch downed wires when you see them and to instead call BGE to handle it, so nobody gets hurt.

Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School’s commercial started with two girls, one was crying and the other girl was comforting her.

The girl was crying because there were wires down.

The other girl, informed her that it was no problem, all they had to do was call BGE, so they can take care of it.

After that scene, three fifth-grade boys, began singing and dancing to the “Wires Down” jingle.

This is Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School’s third year participating in the challenge and their first year winning.

Third and fifth graders were allowed to attend the ceremony, where BGE officials award the school with the cash prize.

“The money will go to our video club,” Myers said.

Any school is allowed to participate in the BGE contest and about 15 schools submitted videos this year, according to Myers.

BGE supplies educational materials to teachers, with downloadable entry kits and basic lesson formats on electricity and electric safety.

BGE’s Wires Down Video challenge has awarded $80,000 in school funding to 29 schools since the start of the challenge in 2012.

According to Myers, Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School plans on submitting a Wires Down Challenge video next year.

“Students already ideas,” Myers said. have
