Sparrows Point edges Perry Hall in classic county title game
The Sparrows Point girls soccer team played one of their tightest, best games of the season while edging Perry Hall in overtime for the Baltimore County championship.
Now the Pointers get to kick back and relax over what is essentially a two-week break before the Class 1A state semifinals.
Dani Zacierka scored the winning goal in over time as the Pointers edged Perry Hall 1-0 for their fourth county title in the last five seasons.
Three of those county championships have come at the expense of the Gators.
It was only the second goal of the season for Zacierka.
Getting a crossing pass from Julie Lynch in the center of the field, Zacierka somehow got off a hard shot despite being off-balance, falling and getting hit by Perry Hall’s Ashlee Wilsynski.
While moving to her right, Zacierka made a sliding shot back to her left with her right leg nearly on the ground.
“I’m pretty good at taking tough-angled shots like that,” Zacierka said. “I saw the goalkeeper on the right side, so I shot for the left.”
Zacierka’s goal ended a tense, hardfought contest between two highlyskilled, evenly-matched teams.
Both teams had several opportunities to score during regulation, only to be denied by tenacious defense and goalkeepers Jaddah Foos (Sparrows Point) and Lauren Gwin (Perry Hall).
It was the second time this season Sparrows Point defeated Perry Hall in overtime. The Pointers prevailed 4-3 in September.
The county championship game was on Oct. 23. The unbeaten Pointers don’t play again until they host either Loch Raven or Western Tech in the Class 1A North Region Section I finals on Friday.
The five-time defending Class 1A state champs will be favored to win that game, and heavily favored to defeat whichever team wins the Section II title (Carver A&T or Chesapeake).
Sparrows Point won’t have another tough game until the state semifinals on November 9 or 10 against the South Region champion.
