Henrietta Lacks essay contest now open

The Dundalk Eagle - - REC COUNCIL NEWS -

The Henrietta Lacks Legacy Group is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Essay and Video Competition. Open to all middle, high, and home schooled students, the competition is designed to extend the extraordinary legacy of Mrs. Lacks to new generations of students. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 31, 2018.

Middle school students are invited to write a letter to Henrietta Lacks reflecting on her contributions

to medicine and how her HeLa cells affected them or their families personally.

High school students are invited to submit essays or video clips on the importance of recognizing Mrs. Lacks’ contributions to the world.

Lacks is best recognized for her immortal HeLa cells, as they are known in the medical research complex. Her cells have been used in research that led to the development of the Polio vaccine and for the development of the cancer drugs tamoxifen as well as chemotherapy. Advanced research for influenza, Parkinson’s disease and leukemia cures were major

contributions developed from the HeLa cells. Further research, which led to gene mapping, cloning and in-vitro fertilization are also to be included among contributions made by HeLa cells. HeLa cells were used to test the effects of atomic radiation, and they were sent into outer space for experimentation on zero gravity. These immortal cells are still the highestranking research cell used throughout all major medical research complexes around the world.

HLLG is a non-profit (501 c 3) organization that exists to protect, preserve, and promote the legacy of Henrietta Lacks and her contributions

to modern medicine (via HeLa Cells). It also exists to serve as a clearing house for activities that extend Lacks’ legacy and historic of Turner Station, Maryland, where Lacks resided at the time of her death. The Annual Essay and Video Competition is one of the ways HLLG meets its mission.

Winners will be recognized at the Black History Month Event scheduled for Feb. 24, 2019, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 651 Mount Olive Road.
