Volunteers lay wreaths at military cemetery
Cheltenham event one of over 1,600 ceremonies held annually nationwide; 8,300 laid locally this year
Heavy rains did not deter hundreds of volunteers from gathering at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Prince George’s County on Saturday morning to lay over 8,300 wreaths on the graves of soldiers interred there.
Cars filled the ceme- tery’s roads and along U.S. Route 301 as volunteers began arriving hours in advance. Across the highway, the Brandywine Lions Club offered its field for overflow parking and ran school buses to and from the cemetery to shuttle volunteers to the event, which was part of the nationwide Wreaths Across America program.
The ceremony drew an estimated 750 to 800 people including active-duty and retired military personnel, grade school students, JROTC classes and families whose relatives are among the 28,000 veterans interred at the cemetery.
