Liberty takes Atlantic League All-Star Game
Two Blue Crabs combine for two hits and two RBIs in loss for Freedom
The Atlantic League’s best were on display Wednesday night at Bethpage Ballpark, home of the Long Island Ducks, for its 21st annual gathering of all-stars.
And the fans in Central Islip, N.Y., were not disappointed.
On a night where 6,414 fans in attendance got to enjoy the in-game entertainment and other festivities, the Freedom Division and Liberty Division battled only to see the one team’s offense have the final answer in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Atlantic League All-Star Game.
With the game deadlocked at 3, Somerset shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez delivered with the two-out RBI single to left field, lifting Liberty to a 4-3 walk-off win over Freedom.
It marked the first time since 2010 that the Liberty Division won an all-star game.
Rodriguez, who was named the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, had the best offensive output of any player on the night, finishing 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk, including the game-winning base hit off of Sugar Land closer Felipe Paulino, who suffered the loss.
New Britain pitcher Evan Scribner picked up the win in relief, striking out all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth.
The Freedom Division was comprised of Lancaster, Sugar Land, York and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, while the Liberty Division, the home team for the all-star contest, consisted of New Britain, Somerset, Long Island and the Road Warriors.
Six Southern Maryland Blue Crabs were selected to participate in Wednesday’s consisting of starting pitcher Daryl Thompson, who could not play due to a broken jaw injury suffered in season’s first half, reliever Sam Runion, outfielder Cory Vaughn, first baseman Devon Rodriguez, third baseman Frank Martinez and shortstop Edwin Garcia.
Martinez led the way for the Freedom all-stars with
a base hit and two RBIs, while Garcia added one hit to represent the Blue Crabs.
Somerset’s Julio Borbon gave Liberty a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-out solo home run.
In the top of the third with one out, Garcia doubled to left. Darian Sandford walked, setting up Martinez, who gave Freedom a 2-1 lead on a tworun single to center field.
After a double steal put Martinez and Sandford on second and third, Sandford later scored on a Welington Dotel ground out to third to make the game 3-1.
Liberty tied the game up at 3 apiece in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by New Britain’s Deibinson Romero and Rodriguez, both off of Runion.
Prior to the All-Star Game, Romero claimed the Digmi Home Run Derby championship, hitting three home runs in the final round. Vaughn hit one home run and was not able to advance.
