Nonprofit gets boost for its Dragon Boat Festival
Group helps people with disabilities
Southern Maryland Community Resources, which develops inclusive programs for citizens with developmental differences, is partnering with Cedar Point Federal Credit Union for the third consecutive year to support the Dragon Boat Festival fundraising event.
Cedar Point announced last week that it would once again sponsor the Dragon Boat Festival, which is held annually in Solomons Island. Cedar Point CEO Charlie Roach presented a check for $10,000 on Friday to Bonnie Elward, executive director of SMCR, and members of the group’s bowling team at Esperanza Lanes in Lexington Park.
“It’s such a wonderful organization and it’s for folks that sometimes don’t get enough attention,” Roach said. “We do have a team that competes [in the festival] and we have a lot of fun doing that. We have a great time.”
Employees of Cedar Point joined in to form bowling teams with approximately 15 in attendance.
Elward was pleased with the turnout and said the evening was about welcoming the bank’s employees to join in and have a great night of fun.
“This is the third year they have sponsored the event,” she said, “and I’d like to see other organizations get involved as well.”
“We are so fortunate to be in a position to give back to our community in such a meaningful way,” Kristin Kauffman, marketing director at Cedar Point, said. “Getting to meet the people who benefit from our sponsorship really means a lot to our employees. We are definitely on board to do this again.”
The Rev. Michael Wilson of Our Lady Star of the Sea said the evening was enjoyable.
“It’s nice to see a mix between people with disabilities and people without disabilities, and getting them together just breaks down those walls, so everyone’s comfortable together. Good for Cedar Point,” he said.
The Dragon Boat Festival is planned for Aug. 16 and 17. For more information, contact Elward at 301-997-8143 or visit www.somdcr.org.
