Leader Lookback: DECA officers, 40th anniversary

TO OBSERVE 40TH ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. William Burklo, 158 Longview, Villa Nova, will observe their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday with an open house at their home with a family dinner being served. Iva Powell and J. William Burklo were married Oct. 4, 1930 in Lima. The justice of the peace performed the marriage service in his office directly across the street from the courthouse. They have lived in and around St. Marys almost all of their married life. Mr. Burklo has been employed at Goodyear since 1942. Mrs. Burklo is a former employee of Mersman Brothers, Celina.
Mr. and Mrs. Burklo are looking forward to having Mr. Burklo’s 95-year-old mother, Mrs. Almyra Burklo with them, for their anniversary observance. Mr. Burklo has four brothers and one sister living, Edward, Loren, Carl and Herbert Burklo and Mrs. Marie McPher
on. One sister Olive McPheron is deceased. Mrs. Burklo has two sisters, Mrs. Ava Riggs, Holcomb, Missouri and Mrs. Ova Hartley, Gobler, Missouri. She has two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eurties Powell and Mrs. Adies Powell, also of Missouri. Mrs. Burklo is a native of Missouri. She came to Lima to visit with a friend from Missouri who was married and living in Lima.
It was there she met Mr. Burklo, employed then at the Lima Locomotive Mr. and Mrs. Burklo are members of the Church of God.
SMHS DECA CHAPTER OFFICERS
The St. Marys High School Chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America elected its 1970-71 officers in a recent election, which included club adviser, Michael Kerns; president, Debbie Burd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Burd, of Main Street; vice president, Jack Lininger, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lininger of Hendricks Avenue; secretary, Sue Slagle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Slagle, of Westway Court; treasurer, Chris Speckman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Speckman of R.R. 1; reporter and historian, Debbie Ashbaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ashbaugh of Webb Street; and Jeanette Severt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roman Severt, of R.R. 1, parliamentarian.
DECA identifies the program of youth activity relating to the Distributive Education (DE) course and is designed to develop future leaders for marketing and distribution. It is the only national youth organization operating through the public schools to at tract young people to careers in marketing and distribution.
“DECA Chapter activities are always school-centered, thus contributing to the school’s purpose of preparing well-adjusted, employable citizens. Chapter activities serve the Teacher-Coordinator as a teaching tool by creating interest in all phases of marketing and distribution study, and serve as an avenue for individual talent,” Mr. Kerns said. The Chapter is the “show window” for student achievement and progress. It attracts students to the DE program who are interested in marketing management and distribution careers and assists in subject matter presentation.
NKHS SR. GIRL IS COMMENDED BY NMSQT SCORE
A letter of commendation honoring Mary Fledderjohann for her high performance on the 1970 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test has been received by Martin Rehmert, principal at New Knoxville high school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Fledderjohann, R.R. 1, New Knoxville, and is active in the high school chorus and band.
She has been a member of the scholarship team for the last three years and participated in the class play as a junior. She is class treasurer.
