Residents reminded as voter registration deadline nears

WAPAKONETA — The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming general election is just around the corner.

Residents who want to vote in the November election must register by the end of business on Monday.

Auglaize County is home to 32,222 registered voters, down by about 200 from the same time last year.

“People are constant- ly moving, changing addresses,” Auglaize County Board of Elections Director Michelle Wilcox said, explaining why some people get taken off the list of voters. Board of elections officials work with different agencies — like the postal service — to help reach people at their new address for verification.

The board of elections office will stay open until 9 p.m. Monday for last-minute registrations; voter registration is also available online by visiting OhioVote.Gov.

“It’s simple. You just go in and put your type of ID (identification) and you can register on- line,” Wilcox said.

Wilcox said Tuesday was Voter Registration Day and a few people who had seen social media promotions called the office to make sure they were registered.

The board of elections has been proactive about registrations in the county.

“We send registrations to the nursing homes, in case they have new residents that move in and out and change addresses,” Wilcox said as an example.

Voters can check if they are registered online through the secre- tary of state’s office at ohiosos.gov/elections/ voters or by calling the

Auglaize County board of elections office.

“It’s always good to make sure and check that it is updated,” Wilcox said. “If you move to a different county, we find out about it in the state of Ohio, but if you move to a different state, we can’t cancel registrations, it has to be the voter that does that.”

Wilcox said If somebody passes away in another state, often times they will stay on the rolls until they have been inactive for two federal elections. She said they would need a certified death certificate for changes to otherwise be made.
