Historical society presenting a Facebook Live event on Oct. 18
The Auglaize County Historical Society will present “Trainwrecks, Shipwrecks, and Spooky Tales” with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, as a Facebook Live event on the Historical Society’s Facebook page. The event is free and open to the public. It is presented as part of the ongoing heritage tourism initiative entitled “Auglaize County: IN MOTION.”
Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves the stories of America. One of those is that of transportation. Simple, you may think, going from one place to another, but that would simplify the impact. Each mode of transportation changed landscapes, lives, and the stories we share. All are invited to join a national park ranger and volunteers to explore the evolution of transportation through ghost stories.
To access the event, simply go to the Auglaize County Historical Society’s Facebook page (also accessible via Facebook.com/AuglaizeCountyHistory) a little before 7 p.m. on Oct. 18. The program will appear as the most current post on the page. Make sure you adjust your volume (on the screen), if needed.
“As we explore ways to highlight our local transportation history, Cuyahoga Valley National Park provides a great model,” said Historical Society Administrator Rachel Barber. “We thought that these ‘spooky tales’ would be especially appropriate for October.”
Auglaize County: In Motion is the heritage tourism initiative based upon the themes of motion, movement, and transportation reflected in so much Auglaize County history. IN MOTION projects have been funded on three separate occasions by the Ohio Humanities Council, including this year, when $11,000 was awarded. Among other projects, this third grant will allow the historic sites and museums to incorporate QR codes and other technology to encourage heritage tourism and inform visitors.
About the Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Though a short distance from the urban areas of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park seems worlds away. The park is a refuge for native plants and wildlife, and provides routes of discovery for visitors. The winding Cuyahoga River gives way to deep forests, rolling hills, and open farmlands. Walk or ride the Towpath Trail to follow the historic route of the Ohio & Erie Canal.
