School board recognizes efforts from first semester

NEW KNOXVILLE — As the second nine weeks of the school year begin to wind down, the New Knoxville Board of Education reviewed the school’s first semester happenings.

The board met on Monday evening to discuss updates to recent projects and gave thanks to those that have been supporting the school since their last meeting. Things have been busy for the staff, especially when planning around events like the volleyball games.

“Parent-teacher conferences had to be rescheduled this year because of the volleyball games,” said Principal Jenny Fledderjohann. The rescheduling was unable to be avoided, so she was glad that many parents were able to make it when they could. “So I just want to thank the parents for working with the change and taking advantage of that time to meet with their teachers.”

The Veterans Day program also went off without a hitch on Nov. 11, with many students bringing a veteran family member or friend so they could be honored directly. Fledderjohann is thankful for the work Terry Halko and the student council put into the program to make it an honorable ceremony for everyone.

“It’s just a nice touch and they get to go recognize their veteran,” said Fledderjohann about the ceremony. She believes that around 70 visitors were present during the ceremony. “It was a great way to honor our veterans.”

Fledderjohann also reported on the school’s fundraisers — with the FFA having a successful fruit sale and the music boosters currently making good progress, with both having their items delivered in mid December. The eighth grade class were successful in selling Curly’s meat snacks, and the Designer Purse Bingo operated by eighth grade parents was operated well by

chairs Angie Klopfenstein and Jaime Wellman.

In other news, the board went over several resolutions involving donations made to the school and the approval of purchases and funds. The St. Marys Community Foundation has donated $500 to the music and art department, the Rotary Club of New Bremen/New Knoxville donated $500 to the FFA and National Honor Society, as well as a donation from Dennis and Joan Henschen and anonymous donation for the student fan bus and volleyball expenses of the school. All donations were accepted after some discussion.

The board dismissed shortly after official business was complete.

Events to look out for in the coming weeks are the Fall Athletic Awards and Recognition Night on Nov. 29, the Holiday Concert on Dec. 6 and a NHS Induction ceremony on Dec. 7.
