10 Years Ago (2011) The girls’ basketball season opened up at the annual New Bremen Tip-Off Classic with the homesteadi­ng Cardinals upending the Van Buren Knights 4937 and the New Knoxville Rangers falling to the Anna Rockets, 5637. In the opener, New Knoxville led by one point at the end of the first quarter, but from there it was all Anna as they out-scored the Rangers in each quarter following. Tiana Heidt paced the Rangers in the scoring column on the evening with 12 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds. For New Bremen, they blew things open in the second period by outscoring Van Buren 21-7 to take a 28-14 command at intermissi­on. Although the Knights trimmed their deficit to five points at the end of the third, New Bremen finished things off with a 13-6 run in the closing minutes to take the win. Kyla Otting finished the night as the Cardinals’ leading scorer with 16 points.

25 Years Ago (1996) The high school girls’ basketball season tipped off for both the New Bremen Cardinals and New Knoxville Rangers as they played in the fifth annual Wendy’s Tip-Off tournament in New Bremen. The host Cardinals opened the weekend with a 56-35 triumph over the Anna Rockets, while the Rangers downed Sidney Lehman by a final of 5851.

50 Years Ago (1971)

The New Knoxville boys’ basketball team hit the road for non-* conference boys’ basketball action and defeated the Perry Commodores by a final of 66-56. The Rangers slid out in front 15-11 after one period of play, but Perry pulled ahead 32-28 at the halftime break. The Rangers shook things up in the third quarter by outscoring the home team 19-10 and added five more points in the final stanza to record the 10-point victory. Mark Henschen finished the evening with 22 points to lead the Rangers and was joined in doubledigi­ts by Gary Kattman with 11 counters.
