Minster edges Lady Riders in softball

MINSTER — The Minster softball team edged St. Marys 5-4 in a nonleague contest on Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats scored two in the second after St. Marys had put up one in the first.

St. Marys went in front with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Minster then rallied with three in the bottom of the sixth to get the victory.

Gabrielle Wehrman earned the win with five innings of work. She allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. Brooklyn Osterloh tossed two innings of relief, allowing three hits and one walk. She struck out three.

Karsyn McGlothen suffered a rare defeat, allowing five runs on 11 hits in six innings. She walked two and struck out five.

Minster has won eight in a row and is now 15-2 on the year. St. Marys is now 10-3.

Offensivel­y, Minster’s Addi Inskeep was 4-for-4 with one of the hits a double. Rylin Trego had a double and single. RBIs were collected by Hailee Albers, Lyndi Hemmelgarn and Alayna Prenger.

Makenzie Henning had three hits for St. Marys. McGlothen had two hits and two RBIs. Kelly Holsinger had two hits. Renee Sweigart hit an RBI double and Azaia Murphy drove in a run.

In the top of the first, Henning singled with one out. Sweigart hit a double to center, scoring Henning. Sweigart was thrown out trying to reach third base and McGlothen lined out to second.

Minster responded in the second. Emma Goubeaux drew a walk and Hannah Oldiges was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Albers reached on an error, which also allowed Oldiges to cross home. Trego got a double to right, but was left on base.

Minster loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on hits by Inskeep and Mikaela Hoskins and a walk to Oldiges. St. Marys got out of trouble with a a groundout back to McGlothen.

St. Marys had a hit in the third and one in the fourth, but left the runners on both times.

In the top of the fifth, KayLynn Mabry led off with a walk. Ashlyn Ross and Holsinger singled to load the bases with no outs.

After a strikeout, Murphy reached on a fielder’s choice, with Mabry scoring to tie the game.

McGlothen then helped her own cause with a two-run single to center and put the Riders up 4-2.

Inskeep was left on base after a one-out double in the home half.

In the bottom of the sixth, Oldiges singled and took second on a wild pitch. Emma Linn was sent in to run.

Albers singled to center, scoring Linn. Albers moved up on a wild pitch and came home on a hit by Prenger to even the contest.

Trego singled, and after a flyout, Hemmelgarn drove a pitch to right, bringing Prenger across.

Inskeep got her fourth hit before St. Marys got out of the inning.

Holsinger and Henning led off the Lady Riders seventh with singles. After a flyout, McGlothen was given an intentiona­l walk. Ashlyn Rush went in as a courtesy runner for McGlothen.

Osterloh then sewed up the win with strikeouts of Cadence Hirschfeld swinging and Morgan Hirschfeld looking.

St. Marys (4-1 WBL, 10-3 overall) will host Wapakoneta today and Kenton on Friday.

Minster (4-0 MAC, 15-2 overall) will visit Fort Recovery today. The annual Katie Horstman Classic is set for Friday with Bath, Eastwood, and Russia as the other participan­ts. Games will be at 6 and 8 p.m.

BASEBALL Minster 15, New Knoxville 2

NEW KNOXVILLE — Minster defeated New Knoxville in a Midwest Athletic Conference game reschedule­d from Monday.

New Knoxville broke up the shutout with a run in the fifth.

Minster then broke it open with eight runs in the top of the sixth. The Rangers got one more before the game ended.

Minster’s Logan Kohne had three hits and a walk. Brady Wolf had two hits. Kohne drove in three runs, with two RBIs by Nathan Beair, Alex Schmitmeye­r and Brandon Lickteig.

James Niemeyer threw a complete game to earn the win for Minster. He allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and recorded 12 strikeouts.

For New Knoxville, Jay Schroeder started, allowing five runs on three hits over two innings. Luke Stachler threw 3 1/3, allowing seven runs on five hits. Troy Dwenger then gave up three runs on two hits, retiring two batters. They had nine walks and three strikeouts combined.

In the first inning, Kohne and Johnny Nixon got walks, then scored on a single by Schmitmeye­r. He then advanced and scored on passed balls.

In the second, Adam Rindler walked and Chase Couse singled.

Both then scored on a hit by Kohne.

Minster added one in the fourth. They loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batsman, Nixon hit a sac fly to center, bringing in Adam Rindler to make it 6-0. Schmitmeye­r walked and came around in the next frame.

In the bottom of the fifth, Schroeder opened with a double. Two batters later, Max Henschen drove him in with a single.

In the sixth, a double, walk and three singles made it a 9-1 lead for Minster. After a popup, they got three more runs on a walks and two wild pitches. A single by Kohne and two-run double by Beair completed the scoring for Minster.

In the home half, Preston Rutschilli­ng singled, stole second and came in on a double by Jay Waterman. A strikeout ended the inning and the game.
