New Bremen tops Marion Local

MARIA STEIN — New Bremen defeated Marion Local 8-3 in a Midwest Athletic Conference baseball matchup on Thursday.

Aaron Thieman had three hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, and Drew McNaughton had three hits as well.

Nick Alig was the winning pitcher, with three runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked six and struck out 12. Nolan Kuenning got the game’s final out after allowing a hit and walk.

The Cardinals led off with singles by Alig and McNaughton. Vince Hulse got a hit to score Alig. After a walk to Reece Busse loaded the bases, McNauhgton and Hulse both scored on passed balls.

Marion Local used two walks and two hits to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.

The game stayed 3-2 in favor of New Bremen until the sixth inning. In the top half, the first two batters lined out to third and first.

Thieman, Carter Elking and Ben Sailer got hits to load the bases, and Thieman scored on an error by Marion Local’s center fielder.

The Flyers responded with a run in the bottom half to make it 4-3.

In the seventh, Alig reached on an erro and McNaughton singled. Hulse was put aboard intentiona­lly. Marion Local got one out on a force play at the plate, but Jonny Heitkamp then singled and Thieman doubled to score three runs. Elking’s sac fly gave the Cards their final run

Alig got two strikeouts, then handed the ball to Kuenning. Marion Local stayed alive with a walk and single and error before Kuenning closed the door by a strikeout looking.

New Bremen (3-3 MAC, 7-5 overall) will travel to Russia today, then host Franklin Monroe for a doublehead­er on Saturday.

Minster 7, Fort Recovery 5

MINSTER — Minster earned a MAC victory over Fort Recovery, holding off the Indians after a late rally.

Minster built a 7-1 lead through six innings. Fort Recovery got four runs in the top of the seventh but came up short.

Eli Rindler threw six innings and got the win. He allowed four runs on four hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. Nathan Beair gave up one run on two hits.

Logan Kohne, Beair and Alex Schmitmeye­r all had two hits. Schmitmeye­r and Brady Wolf each drove in two runs, with one RBI each for Johnny Nixon and Zach Fortman.

In the first inning, Kohne and Beair walked, with Nixon driving in Kohne on a single.

Minster added to the lead in the third. Kohne and Beair singled, and Nixon walked to fill the bases. Schmitmeye­r singled to right, bringing in the two lead runners and moving Nixon to third. He came in on a groundout by Wolf to make it 4-0.

After the Indians broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth with one run, it was Beair (single) and Nixon (walk) to start things off for Minster. Two groundouts each advanced the runners, with Beair scoring. Nixon came in on a hit by Fortman.

Chase Couse walked and scored in the sixth.

The Indians loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks. Minster got two outs, giving up one run. Two hits and an error cut the lead to two. After another error, a popup to Beair on the mound secured the win.

Minster (3-4 MAC, 11-5 overall) will travel to Lima Central Catholic for a game today at 5 p.m.
