Coldwater edges Minster to claim league championship

COLDWATER — Coldwater defeated Minster 4-3 on Thursday to claim the Midwest Athletic Conference softball title.

Minster led 3-2 going to the seventh inning. Coldwater tied the game, then got the game winning hit with one out.

Coldwater is now 7-0 in league play and 19-2 overall. Minster falls to 5-1 in the MAC and 16-6 in all games.

Mikaela Hoskins took the loss, allowing six hits in the game. She walked one and struck out four.

Madison Wendel of Coldwater gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks. She struck out four.

For Minster, Hannah Oldiges had three hits and a walk, driving in one run for the Lady Wildcats. Rylin Trego had two RBIs.

After a scoreless first, Coldwater took the lead when Maddie Sheffer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

Minster responded in the top of the third. Lyndi Hemmelgarn reached on an error, getting to second base. Savanah Bergman walked and Addi Inskeep singled to load the bases.

After a flyout, Oldiges singled to score Hemmelgarn and tie the game.

In the fifth inning, Avery Knapke singled to lead off. A sac bunt moved her to second. Madison Wendel reached on an error. Macy Sheffer singled to center, to score Knapke and retake the lead. A double play prevented further damage.

gled to begin the sixth. Two groundouts followed, with the runners advancing on the second.

Trego singled to center, scoring both runners and making it 3-2 for Minster. Hemmlegarn got aboard due to an error before a flyout ended the inning.

Minster left two runners on in the top of the seventh, with a single by Hoskins and a walk to Oldiges.

Kendra Clune got a walk off Hoskins. She was bunted over to second. Grace Stammen singled to center, and Clune scored to tie the game.

After Wendel reached due to an error, Sheffer doubled to bring Stammen around with the winning run.

Minster will wrap up the regular season today with a home game against Versailles.
