Riders place third at WBLs
LIMA — The Western Buckeye League boys tennis tournament was concluded on Friday at Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.
At first singles, Gabe Burke of Shawnee defeated Joey Vanderhorst of St. Marys in the championship match, 6-0, 6-3.
At second singles, Aristide Brasille of the Roughriders earned third place with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ben Osmon of Elida.
St. Marys’ Connor Milner also finished third with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Elida’s Dylan Byers.
In the first doubles bracket, Rhett Chisholm and Isaac Wibbeler of St. Marys lost to Shawnee’s Salah Mohammed and Gabe Rutter in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. In the third place match, they were defeated by Bath’s Austin and
WIll Miller by scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Cody Birt and Jaxton Spees lost to Ethan Weis and Levi Unterbrink of Ottawa-Glandor in the semis, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. The pair then faced Caiden Bush and Britton Hall of Bath in the match for third and got a win in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Shawnee was named the team champions. Ottawa-Glandorf was second, followed by St.
Marys.
The Roughriders finished 6-3 in league play. They had wins over Defiance, Celina, Van Wert, Elida, Wapakoneta and Kenton, with losses to Ottawa-Glandorf, Shawnee and Bath. Twp of the three losses were by 3-2 margins.
They are 11-3 overall and will wrap up the 2022 regular season on Monday with a match at Lehman Catholic. Play will begin at 5 p.m.
