Roughrider­s edge Flyers in 10

MARIA STEIN — The St. Marys baseball team had to put in some overtime in their return to action on Monday.

The Roughrider­s edged host Marion Local 6-5 in 10 innings for a nonleague victory. It is their third win in a row, and the second straight in extra innings. They defeated St. Henry 5-4 in eight innings last Monday before rain washed out games with Elida and Spencervil­le.

Cole Koenig, A.J. Dieringer, Brayden Sullivan and Ty Kiehl each had two hits, with 11 in in all for the Roughrider­s. Both of Sullivan’s were doubles, with Joey Caldwell also getting a two-base hit.

Trey Leatherman drove in the winning, run, with the other RBIs by Koenig, Dieringer, Sullivan, and Caldwell.

The winning pitcher was Kiehl, who pitched the final three innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk, with eight strikeouts.

Brayden Sullivan started the game, allowing four runs on three hits in the first inning. He walked one batter in the second, then gave way to Calvin Caywood.

Caywood worked six innings, allowing a run on five hits. He did not walk a a batter, and got seven strikeouts.

Koenig led off the game with a single to center. Dieringer put down a sac bunt to get him into scoring position. Sullivan followed with a double to left as the Riders struck first.

The Flyers struck back in the bottom half, Sullivan allowed two walks and a single to load the bases. An error let in one run, and a single put the hosts up by one. St. Marys got two outs, then Marion Local got a double to score two more.

After two scoreless frames, Kiehl led off the fourth with a single. Greg Felver reached on a misplayed fly ball. Alex Yahl reached on a fielder’s choice, with Kiehl scoring after another misplay. Two flyouts ended the inning.

St. Marys left two men on in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Yahl reached on an error with one out, advancing to second on the play. Koenig brought him around on a line drive single to center, cutting the gap to 4-3. Dieringer got aboard. Two batters later, Caldwell’s double to left plated Koenig and

tied the contest.

Caywood continued to hold Marion Local down, allowing only a single in the bottom of the sixth.

The Riders got the first man on in the seventh with a single by Kiehl. Felver sacrificed him over to second. After a groundout kept Kiehl at second, Yahl was plunked and Koenig walked to load the bases.

Marion Local switched pitchers, but Dieringer came through with a single on the left side, scoring Kiehl and putting the Roughrider­s back in front 5-4.

The Flyers opened the home half with a hit batter. Caywood got a strikeout and groundout, then allowed a double which brought the runner around. Another groundout left it even, and sent it to extras.

A dropped third strike and two errors put Leatherman and Kiehl on the basepaths in the eighth. Felver singled to load the bases with one out. Easton Craft popped out in foul ground, and Leatherman was tagged at the plate for the third out.

Kiehl took the mound for St. Marys. He allowed a walk and single with one out, then got the next two on strikes.

Both sides went in order in the ninth, with Kiehl striking out the side.

Sullivan opened the 10th with a double to right. Caldwell’s bunt moved him to the doorstep at third. Leatherman’s ground ball was handled by the shortstop and thrown across in time. However, it also allowed Sullivan to score the go-ahead run. Kiehl then flew out to left.

Kiehl went back on the bump. He got the first man looking, the second on a fly ball to left. The next man worked the count full before Kiehl got a swingand-miss to wrap up the win.

St. Marys (1-7 WBL, 6-10 overall) will host Elida on Wednesday in the final league game of the season.

DELPHOS — New Knoxville fell to host Jefferson in non league baseball play on Monday.

The Rangers scored their run in the fourth inning, with the game ending after the fifth.

Max Henschen was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Pitching in relief were Luke Stachler and Preston Rutschilli­ng.

Tyler Lammers, Jay Schroeder and Rutschilli­ng had hits for the Rangers.

New Knoxville (0-7 MAC, 1-13 overall) will travel to New Bremen on Wednesday.
