First day of WBL track meet held

VAN WERT — The first day of competitio­n was held for the Western Buckeye League track and field meet on Wednesday afternoon.

Finals were held in the boys and girls’ 4x800 meter relays, along with the high jump and discus for girls, and the long jump, shot put and pole vault for boys.

Preliminar­ies were held in the 100/110m and 300m hurdles, 100m, 200 and 400m dashes, and the other three relays.

Finals for those events along with the 800, 1600 and 3200m runs will be held today, along with the other field events.

In the girls’ 4x800, the Lady Roughrider­s finished fourth with a time of 10:16.67. Running were Emma Freewalt, Maria Jutte, Karlie Lucas and Ellen Schloemer.

Ella Jacobs took first place in the high jump by clearing a height of 5-feet-1. Reghan Puthoff finished third at 4-10.

In the discus, Kaci Anthony finished seventh with a throw of 92-6. Also in action was Shalynn Liette (11th, 82-11).

For the boys 4x800, St. Marys was sixth. The time of 8:43.16 was run by Seth Brandt, Cole Hughes, Ray Walter and Tyler Birt.

Brandon Bowers was the champion in long jump at 21 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Also competing was Jaikob Long, who had a jump of 16-4 3/4 and finished 18th.

Isaac Torsell was second in the pole vault at 12 feet even.

For the shot put, Ross Henschen took seventh with a throw of 43-4 1/2. Zavier LeClairJoh­nson had a throw of 37-5 1/4 to finish 14th.

After the first day, the St. Marys girls are in first place with 20 points. The boys team has 19 points and is second.
