Hey! I Remember That!

10 Years Ago (2012) The St. Marys baseball team closed their baseball season with a Western Buckeye League victory by a final of 5-0 over the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans. The victory closed their campaign with a 19-7 overall record and 7-2 in WBL play. Brad Sawmiller earned the victory on the hill for the Blue and Gold after allowing just two hits, and striking out nine, while Jarrett Taylor drove in three runs in the victory which nailed down second place in the conference for the season.*

25 Years Ago (1997) Former New Bremen track standout Julie Niekamp was having a stellar season at Bowling Green University. After winning the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 9 inches at the Kentucky Field Event Festival, it was on to the MidAmerican Conference championships the following week where she would participate in the same event as well as the high jump. Her personal bests for the season were 5-5 in the high jump and 36-2 1/4 in triple jump.

50 Years Ago (1972)

The St. Marys girls’ track team was in action in a dual meet with Waynesfield and came out on the better side of a 92-34 final score. Winners in the meet included Jones in the 440-yard run, Glass in the 880-yard run, as well as the Roughriders’ 440-yard and 880yard relay teams. In the hurdle events, it was Wilker in the 50-yard race and Makley in the 80-yarder. Makley also took home first in the high jump, while Eshelman took the discus and Brodbeck was first in the shot put.

(Note: It was common in the 1970s to not include first names in the event summaries. We apologize for the inconvenience.)
