St. Marys picks up 6-0 tournament baseball win

- By TONY ARNOLD

In a game scoreless through four innings, St. Marys Memorial scored in the first and put up five runs in the sixth on their way to an impressive 6-0 victory over Celina in tournament action.

Brayden Sullivan was on the hill for the Roughriders and he was outstanding. Sullivan pitched all seven innings, gave up just three hits, and recorded six strikeouts. Sullivan set the tone early, retiring the first seven batters of the game, and worked efficiently through the contest.

“We put together a solid all around game. Sully continues to be our workhorse this year. We know he’s always going to give us everything he’s got. He did a great job of keeping Celina off balance tonight and he and the defense worked out of some jams early on,” said St. Marys Memorial coach Adam Graves.

The Roughriders broke open the scoreless game when Caleb Felver ripped a double to left field to plate Craft who walked earlier in the inning.

St. Marys got the bats out in a big way in the sixth inning. The Roughriders tallied five runs in the momentum building inning to build a 6-0 lead in the game. Ethan Hollandsworth, Caleb Felver, AJ Dieringer, and Sullivan each drove in runs during the inning.

“Caleb Felver had a huge hit for us in the fifth to get us on the board. In the sixth, we were able to break the game open with some timely hits and putting the ball in play and putting pressure on Celina. Jace Turner came in in a tough situation and got us a nice sac fly to get us the second run. We didn’t try to do too much and once we started just making solid contact and not popping the ball up we were successful,” said Graves.

The Roughriders outhit the Bulldogs 5-3 on the night. A big difference in the game was the ability of St. Marys to deliver key base hits with run- ners in scoring position. Additionally, the Roughrider defense was once again very solid. St. Marys didn’t commit a single error. Celina had four errors in the game.

Brady Steinbrunner was the starting pitcher for Celina. Steinbrunner pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out five. Zander Jones threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

“Brady Steinbrunner did a great job for Celina tonight. Celina is a solid team, and we knew we’d have our work cut out for us. I’m proud of this team and coaching staff. The guys kept working and could have packed it in when we started the season 2-7. Winning a Sectional Title is Big for us and the program. We know we’re going to have to play our best baseball Thursday against Wapak,” concluded Graves.
