WHAT’S WITH THE DIAGONAL RAFTERS?

I worried that this whole structure would easily sway from side to side. To prevent this “racking,” I considered adding diagonal bracing to the posts or above the rafters. But either option would have just looked bad. Then the solution came to me: diagonal rafters! They add rock-solid stability and look beautiful from below.
