Ames fires closing 68 to win JAGA Senior Amateur

Richard Ames

won the 1985 Gate Invitation­al with one of the three rounds at the Deerwood Country Club.

Nearly 40 years later, he won another title at Deerwood, with a stunning finalround rally.

Ames shot 68 on April 9 to win the 67th Jacksonvil­le Area Golf Associatio­n Senior Amateur Championsh­ip by two shots over and four over and

Ames, who plays out of Eagle Landing, stood at 7-over through 36 holes and trailed Vallencour­t (a Timuquana member), who was 1-under. Ames began his final round with four birdies among his first six holes, then played the final 12 holes at even par to earn the Frank Rogers Trophy.

Anthony (70), a two-time JAGA Senior champion and Moody (71) both shot under-par rounds to get inside the top five.

“I just told myself to put my head down and see what happens,” Ames told jaxareagol­f.org of his comeback.

Ames, who won the Gate as an amateur and profession­al, regained his amateur status in the early 2000s and is an operations manager for Bank of America.

Junior Tour 13-15 tournament at the Jacksonvil­le Beach Golf Club by one shot at 3-under-par 139.

Ha held off a charge by of St. Johns with a bogey-free second round, including eight pars in a row to close out. Hipp had the tournament’s low round with a 65, making birdie on five of his first 11 holes, then added an eagle at No. 13.

Palencia team finishes second

The Palencia Club team almost took advantage of a home-county advantage and finished second in the Florida State Golf Associatio­n Womens Interclub Championsh­ip at the Slammer & Squire.

Deidre Wray, Trish Lucianao, Lisa Proctor, Maria Nilsson French

and scored 192 points under a 36hole Stableford format. Lake Jovita won with 200 points.

Wray scored 67 points, Lucianao 63 and Proctor 62 to lead Palencia.
