The Colorado State Rams suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday as they went cold from the field in a 53-33 setback to St. Mar y’s.

CSU (2-1) had gotten of f to a hot star t on the year, defeating CSU-Pueblo and the University of Northern Arizona to begin the season. Head coach Niko Medved acknowledged that St. Mar y’s would prove to be a tough battle last week as the Gaels entered the game at 7-1. The Rams were cold from the start, going scoreless in the first 6 minutes of play. Ultimately, CSU shot just 25% from the field (12of-48).

However, Medved was accentuating the positive after the game.

“If you would’ve told me we would hold St. Mar y’s to 53 points I’d have thought we’d be right there to win,” he said. “I’ve never been par t of an of fensive game like that. They really disrupted us early and I don’t think I did a good job of getting our guys prepared to play against (them). (St. Mar y’s) is extremely physical and that isn’t anything we didn’t know, but we just hadn’t seen anything like this the first few games we played.”

The Gaels got of f to a 14-0 lead to star t the game until James Moors hit back-to-back layups to put the Rams on the board. Unfor tunately, CSU trailed St. Mar y’s at halftime 33-17 as the Rams shot just 8-for31 in the first half, including just three of their first 19 attempts from the field. Medved was right about the Rams’ defensive ef for t, however, as they held St. Mar y’s to just 36.7% shooting on the night.

Dischon Thomas led the Rams with 8 points.

Next up for CSU will be a Tuesday afternoon game at Santa Clara. That game will be played at 2 p.m. and air on the West Coast Conference Network.
