Board discusses when to hold 2022 FMHS graduation

Graduation parades likely to continue for FMHS as additional part of commencement festivities

The Morgan County Re-3 School Board on Monday,

March 1, tabled a motion to approve the 2022 Fort Morgan High School graduation ceremony after concerns that being placed on a Sunday could conflict with religious practices.

The proposed ceremony would take place on Sunday, May 22, 2022, and was chosen to not conflict with Brush School District’s graduation ceremony, which will take place a week earlier. Fort Morgan High School had for years held the ceremony on a

Saturday but changed it last year to avoid any conflicts with student athletic events.

“We can for sure guarantee that all students will have the opportunity to attend graduation on Sunday. There will not be any conflicting events,” For t Morgan High School Principal Clint Anderson said. “In the past on Saturdays there’s been sporting events, whether that be state track, baseball or whatever, that has not allowed seniors to participate in a graduation ceremony.” The graduation parade, which began last year after COVID restrictions made holding a graduation ceremony impossible, will be the Saturday before graduation.

“This year we’re doing the graduation parade on Saturday, and that has been a big hit with the senior class and it is something that I would like to continue, and the high school would like to continue into the future,” Anderson said.

Board Member Rob Carruth asked if the church community had been asked if the Sunday ceremony conflicted with any church ser vices.

“There may be some students who may not be able to attend for religious reasons on a Sunday, so I just want to make sure we’re not excluding another group of people unintentionally,” Carruth said.

Anderson said he would reach out to local church leaders, and the school board can decide at either their next meeting or their first April meeting if responses can’t be gathered in time.

Interim Re-3 Superintendent

Dr. Rena Frasco reported on Fort Morgan Middle School returning to in-person learning after the boilers at the school malfunctioned and caused temperatures in the school to drop below an acceptable level.

“As far as the middle school boilers, we redid three of them and we’re monitoring the situation,” Dr. Frasco said. “We avoided any bursting pipes.”

The board announced they will be inter viewing the three finalists for the superintendent position, Kevin Case, Antwan Wilson and Joseph Libby, on Wednesday.
