Merle Elton Bristol

Merle Elton Bristol passed away on Tuesday, October 19th at the age of 93. The fifth of ten children, Merle was born to Homer and Dorothy Bristol in South Dakota on March 22, 1928. His family moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado when he was seven years old. Merle embraced growing up in the mountains and in addition to skiing, he participat­ed in ski jumping at Howelsen Hill with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Merle was passionate about aviation from the star t and dedicated his life to both his pursuit of flying and his family.

After graduating high school in 1946, Merle moved to Fort Morgan where he first learned to fly. In 1948 he joined the Air Force working as a radial engine mechanic on the B- 29. His love for flying took of f, eventually turning into a shared business. Merle's brother, Eldred, and he operated Bristol Flying Ser vice and the Fort Morgan Airport. Merle spent his career working as an aerial spray pilot, an airplane mechanic, and a flight instructor. Sharing his passion for aviation by teaching others to fly was his favorite. Merle was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 60 years as well as a Lifetime member of The Elks Lodge in Fort Morgan. Merle met his wife, Marjorie, in 1950 thanks to his sister Frances who introduced them. They wed in 1951 and together raised three children, Steve, Jim and Karen. They had a loving marriage of over 70 years. Spending time with family and friends was one of his greatest joys. Over the years he also enjoyed fishing, working in his shop, and traveling. Merle was a kind, loving, and supportive person to everyone he knew.

He is sur vived by Margie along with children Steve Bristol ( Cindy), Jim Bristol ( Gretchen), and Karen Weatherbie ( Ron); grandchild­ren Kerry, Katie, Ryan, Danny, Amanda, Lisa, and Kyle; great- grandchild­ren Kelly, Evelyn, Ben, and James; sisters Frances Barrett and Arlene Foley; brother Arlo ( Ruby); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Wayne, Eldred, Lester, and Harlan; and sisters Hope David and Elaine Ford.

No ser vices will be held at this time.
