With two weeks remaining in the 2021 cross country season (as of Oct. 18), Fort Morgan’s squad seems to be coming to form at just the right time.

At their own Longs

Peak League meet at Riverside Park on Wednesday, Oct. 13, the Mustang girls earned a fourth-place team finish and the boys earned sixth amid a crowd of ultra-talented runners that included Niwot, one of the best teams in the state.

Senior Elena Arteaga led the girls, as always, with a 12th-place mark and a time of 20 minutes, 10.70 seconds. She was just one of three non-Niwot girls to finish in the top 12. Sophomore Gabriela Arteaga finished 20th at 21:06.00, followed by sophomore Mariana Arteaga (33rd, 22:26.60), senior Olivia Ng (36th, 22:39.80), senior Diana Romero Bermudez (41st, 23:22.60) and sophomore Mitzy Lopez (46th, 24:21.20).

Many of the boys finished a lot closer together.

Senior Joel Campos led the pack at 21st place with a 17:33.80 time. Sophomore Jose Romero and junior Simon Marsh didn’t lag too far behind as they finished 30th (17:56.50) and 32nd (18:04.60), respectively. Sophomore Diego Rangel (38th, 18:19.70) and sophomore Gabriel Deleon (65th, 19:50.00) rounded out the Mustangs’ efforts.

The Mustangs next would turn their sights toward the 4A Region 4 cross country meet at Lyons High School on Thursday, Oct. 21, as they hope to qualify for the state meet in Colorado Springs on Oct. 30.

Fort Morgan volleyball splits tournament

The first win came against Severance in a 2-0 final that saw scores of 2514 and 25-15. Senior Rylee Givens notched four kills as senior Jenna Fritzler added 12 digs and senior Allie Lauck contributed 11 assists.

Their second win of the day came at the behest of Weld Central, but the Rebels didn’t make it easy. Fort Morgan won the first set by a 25-19 score, but the Rebels fought back even harder in the second set. The Mustangs won out by a 26-24 final.
