Wiggins earning votes in CHSAA poll

Tigers planning to travel today to play doubleheader against Sedgwick County

- By Alissa Noe

Wiggins baseball is barely sitting over .500 so far this season, but the Tigers are clearly making an impression as they sift through Class 2A competition.

This week, when CHSAANow.com released its updated, weekly coaches poll, the Tigers found themselves on the outside of the top 10 looking in, but they still had a good view. They earned six votes from coaches, meaning that they more or less are ranked 13th in Class 2A.

Wiggins boasts one of the toughest schedules in all of 2A, according to CHSAA’s RPI system.

Some of their opponents to date have included Class 2A’s No. 1 Limon — who hasn’t lost a single game since 2019 — Class 1A’s No. 2 Merino, Class 1A’s No. 10 Haxtun, Class 3A’s No. 7 The Academy, Class 2A’s No. 4 Highland and Class 1A’s No. 7 Dayspring Christian Academy.

With that kind of talent in the other dugout nearly every game, it’s no wonder why the Tigers currently hold a 7-6 record. In three of those cases, namely Merino, Haxtun and Wray — who’s also earning votes in the 2A poll — the Tigers have been able to pull out at least one victory as all have come to pass through doubleheaders.

Their most recent game, last Thursday, April 21, at Dayspring Christian Academy, they managed to ground the Eagles with a 13-6 final score. Wiggins still has plenty of gameplay left in the regular season, but they’ll have to bring their A-game over the next few weeks if they hope to increase their stock before the postseason rolls around.

The Tigers head next to Sedgwick County for yet another doubleheader Friday, April 29, and they should have no trouble taking the Cougars down. Sedgwick County has only won one game this season, a 21-1 slog against Weldon Valley, and have lost nearly every other contest they’ve played in by a similar score.
