UNC athletic programs to host various camps this summer

Cue the “High School Musical” soundtrack, because it’s almost summertime and kids are going to need activities.

For families with more athletical­ly-inclined children, the University of Northern Colorado is hosting a number of camps.

Here are the camps currently available and the most up-to-date informatio­n.

Men’s basketball

Coach Steve Smiley and his assistants will host two camps this summer for children ages 6-16.

The Player Developmen­t camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6-8. This camp focuses on general basics of basketball, including teamwork, movement, defense and ball handling. It also features several games and other competitio­ns among the participan­ts.

The Shooting and Scoring camp is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m June 13-15. Instructio­n will focus on the fundamenta­ls of shooting, such as footwork and shooting technique.

Both camps include a T-shirt and camp basketball. A $50 discount is applied for campers who attend both.

Women’s basketball

There will be multiple opportunit­ies for budding athletes to learn from coach Kristen Mattio and her staff.

The first is the Complete Skills and Playmaker Academy set for June 2. It is open to those entering sixth through 12th grades and focuses on the fundamenta­ls of basketball. Teamwork and analysis of UNC players will also be featured topics. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $85.

A team camp is set for June 16-18. Commuter and overnight options are available. Full details can be found on the camp website.

The Elite Camp will take place twice, once on June 20 and another on Aug. 3. These will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are designed for girls currently or entering high school. The cost is $85 and includes a reversible jersey.

The Bears Shooting Academy will focus on the developmen­t of shooting basics and how to elevate techniques. It is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 21.

The $85 camp fee includes a T-shirt.

Lastly, the Individual Camp is scheduled for June 22-24 and is for kindergart­eners through eighth graders. This camp is designed to teach the basics through games and contests, with each camp day featuring a fun theme. Participan­ts will be broken up into different age

groups, depending on the number of campers. Each session will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the cost is $115.

Football

The football program will host six camps this summer, starting in June. Coach Ed McCaffrey and his staff will be providing instructio­n and feedback.

The first will be on June 2 for all current and incoming high school students. It will feature a 7v7 passing tournament and Big Man Shootout. A second 7v7 and Big Man Shootout camp is scheduled for June 9. This is for Class 4A and above. The fee is $40 per student. Both begin at 7:30 a.m. and run until 4:35 p.m.

Participan­ts can choose between two skills camps set for June 3 and June 10. They are both open to current and incoming high school students. The camp is open to quarterbac­ks, wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, linebacker­s and defensive backs. They are non-contact and include a T-shirt. The cost is $90 per participan­t. Registrati­on begins at 8 a.m. on both days and the camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

An Elite Skills Showcase is set for June 23-24. Registrati­on begins at 4 p.m. on the first day, with the camp running from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The second day will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. This camp is designed for college prospects who will participat­e in NFL Combine-style events. The cost is $195 per person.

Lastly, the program is hosting a Little Bears

Camp on June 16-17. Registrati­on begins at 8 a.m. both days with the camp running from 9 a.m. to noon. This is open to anyone from first grade through eighth grade and no prior experience is required. The camp is nocontact and campers receive a T-shirt. The camp fee is $150.

Wrestling

Troy Nickerson, coach of NCAA qualifier Andrew Alirez, will work with his staff to help train young wrestlers at his group of camps.

A four-day team camp is set for June 20-23 and focused on competitio­n. Commuter and overnight options are available. The full details are available online.

The Five-Day Intensive Camp is designed for wrestlers who want to improve their current skills. It’s scheduled for June 20-24 with check-in on day one set for 11 a.m. Check-out begins at 11 a.m. on the final day. This is open for 10- to 18-year-olds. The cost for a commuter without meals is $340. Commuters who would like meals provided are subject to a $385 fee. Those who stay overnight will be provided meals and the cost is $475.

Lastly, the Five-Day Technique Camp will focus on individual techniques regardless of the wrestler’s age. This is open to all athletes. It is scheduled for June 27-July 3. Check-in on the first day is scheduled for 11 a.m. and check-out is set to begin at 11 a.m. on the final day. The cost for commuters is $215, the cost for commuters with meals is $360 and the overnight camp costs $450.

Volleyball

The UNC volleyball program is hosting a number of camps this summer for elementary through high school age students.

The Elite Skills Clinic will be open for students entering 7th through 12th grade. It will take place on June 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost for those commuting is $100 and they are required to bring their own lunch. Those who opt to stay overnight will receive housing and meals for a $150 camp fee.

The Three-Day Skills Camp is open to any player entering third through

12th grade. It is set for July 11-13 with the first two days taking place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The final day will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp fee for commuters is $300 and the fee for overnight campers is $400. This camp focuses on all areas of the floor and team play.

UNC will host partial day clinics for back row skills, serving and front row skills. They are open to incoming 3rd through 12th graders.

The back row clinic will take place on July 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers will need to bring lunch. The fee is $100.

The serving clinic is set for 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on July 18. The cost is $30 and will focus only on serving.

The front row skills clinic is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 19. The cost is $100 and campers need to bring their own lunch.

An Advanced Skills Clinic is set for July 20-21 and designed for older players in seventh through 12th grade. Day one will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the second day will last from 9 a.m. to noon. The commuter cost is $125 and overnight price is $200.

Finally, the annual team camp will take place on

July 14-16. This is a tournament format that allows teams to compete against each other. Last year, teams from multiple states attended. A range of details can be found on the UNC volleyball website.
