Wiggins tapering off toward postseason

- By Alissa Noe

With just a few weeks left until CHSAA makes its selection for Class 2A regional baseball, Wiggins is looking pretty solid.

According to CHSAA’s guidelines, the top 32 teams ranked in their RPI system will get a crack at the regional tournaments that are set to be played on May 21. The selection committee will release its brackets on May 18.

As it stands right now, the Tigers are sitting pretty with a No. 9 ranking in that RPI system, and they’ve certainly had their fair share of tough opponents this season with Caliche (receiving votes in 1A poll), 2A’s No. 1 Limon, 1A’s No. 2 Merino, 1A’s No. 6 Haxtun, The Academy (receiving votes in 3A poll), 2A’s No. 3 Highland, Dayspring Christian Academy (who recently dropped out of the 1A top 10) and Yuma (receiving votes in 2A poll).

Through all of that tough competition, the Tigers have managed to come out on top more often than not with their 12-8 record.

They can credit a lot of that success to their high-octane offense, which has put up 197 runs on 266 hits and has included a couple mindbending, 30-0 and 36-7 scores over Sedgwick County.

They boast a strong core of hitters in Taryn Yzaguirre (.547 batting average), Brody Frye (.514 batting average), Truett Freauff (.500 batting average), Grayson Johnson (.483 batting average), Toribio Gomez (.458 batting average) and Jordan Book (.451 batting average). Yzaguirre has served as their main mound man as he’s been recording a 2.94 ERA with a 6-1 record, 68 strikeouts and just 21 earned runs.

Most recently, the Tigers downed Holyoke in strong scoring affairs that saw

13-2 and 24-13 finals. They have just three games left in the regular season, first in a doubleheader against a 10-10 Akron team this Saturday before heading to Highland for their regular season finale on Tuesday, May 17.

If Wiggins keeps up what it’s already been doing, it should be looking pretty good for the day CHSAA selects its regional teams.
