SER­ENA WIL­LIAMS OUT OF MON­TREAL TOUR­NEY FOR PER­SONAL REA­SONS

Ser­ena Wil­liams pulled out of next week’s Rogers Cup hard-court tour­na­ment, cit­ing per­sonal rea­sons. The tour­na­ment an­nounced Wil­liams’ with­drawal Satur­day.

Wil­liams will be re­placed in the draw in Mon­treal by Tat­jana Maria, who faces Al­ize Cor­net in the first round.

The 23-time Grand Slam cham­pion is com­ing off the most lop­sided de­feat of her ca­reer, a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Jo­hanna Konta in San Jose on Tues­day.

Wil­liams, 36, was the run­ner-up at Wim­ble­don last month. That was just her fourth tour­na­ment since re­turn­ing to the tour af­ter hav­ing a baby in Septem­ber and deal­ing with a health scare re­lated to blood clots.

Martin Kl­izan of Slo­vakia has won his sixth ATP ti­tle in six fi­nals by beat­ing De­nis Is­tomin of Uzbek­istan 6-2, 6-2 at the Gen­er­ali Open in Kitzbue­hel, Aus­tria. The sec­ond all-qual­i­fier fi­nal on the tour since 1990 is wrapped up in 68 min­utes.

De­fend­ing cham­pion and No. 1 seed Alexan­der Zverev reached the fi­nal of the Citi Open with a 6-2, 6-4 vic­tory over 10thseeded Ste­fanos Tsit­si­pas 6-2, 6-4 in Wash­ing­ton.
