Attacks increase as US-Taliban talks resume

The Fresno Bee (Sunday) - - News - — NEW YORK TIMES

Violence surged across Afghanistan as U.S. and Taliban officials started a seventh round of peace talks Saturday, with high hopes for a breakthrough.

The talks, held in the Qatari capital, Doha, aim to hammer out a provisional schedule for U.S. troop withdrawal in exchange for Taliban guarantees that international terror groups will not operate on Afghan soil.

The attacks Friday and Saturday, which killed as many as 300 fighters from both sides, was a sign that optimism at the negotiations might not translate to an immediate reduction in violence, as the rivals seek battlefield gains for leverage.
