Sweden beats England to take third place

The Fresno Bee (Sunday) - - Sports -

Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson each scored and Sweden beat England 2-1 Saturday night at Nice, France, to take third place in the Women’s World Cup.

Asllani, who was taken off the field in a stretcher during Sweden’s semifinal loss to the Netherlands, started Saturday and gave the Swedes the lead in the 11th minute as they took advantage of early struggles by England. Alex Greenwood had plenty of time to clear Fridolina Rolfo’s cross but sent it straight into the path of Asllani, who drilled it into the bottom right corner.
