Driver ar­rested af­ter 2-car crash kills child, 8, near Reed­ley

An 8-year-old child was killed Fri­day evening fol­low­ing a two-car crash out­side of Reed­ley, ac­cord­ing to the Cal­i­for­nia High­way Pa­trol.

Daniel Le­mus, 21, failed to stop at a stop sign at South and Alta av­enues, ac­cord­ing to CHP spokesman Mike Salas.

A sedan trav­el­ing north­bound on Alta Av­enue, which has no stop signs, was hit on the pas­sen­ger’s side by Le­mus’ ve­hi­cle, Salas said.

The crash hap­pened around 5:25 p.m. east of Reed­ley.

Two peo­ple in the sedan were able to get out with the help of by­standers, ac­cord­ing to the Reed­ley Fire­men’s As­so­ci­a­tion, and the child was pulled from the car.

By­standers at­tempted CPR on the child be­fore paramedics ar­rived and took all three to Ad­ven­tist Med­i­cal Cen­ter in Reed­ley. It was de­ter­mined the child died on im­pact, Salas said.

Le­mus was not in­jured, and was ar­rested on sus­pi­cion of gross ve­hic­u­lar man­slaugh­ter and driv­ing un­li­censed.
