Driver arrested after 2-car crash kills child, 8, near Reedley
An 8-year-old child was killed Friday evening following a two-car crash outside of Reedley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Daniel Lemus, 21, failed to stop at a stop sign at South and Alta avenues, according to CHP spokesman Mike Salas.
A sedan traveling northbound on Alta Avenue, which has no stop signs, was hit on the passenger’s side by Lemus’ vehicle, Salas said.
The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. east of Reedley.
Two people in the sedan were able to get out with the help of bystanders, according to the Reedley Firemen’s Association, and the child was pulled from the car.
Bystanders attempted CPR on the child before paramedics arrived and took all three to Adventist Medical Center in Reedley. It was determined the child died on impact, Salas said.
Lemus was not injured, and was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving unlicensed.
