Fresno po­lice make ar­rest in as­sault that pre­ceded hit-and-run

A Fresno man has turned him­self into the Fresno Po­lice Depart­ment fol­low­ing an as­sault that pre­ceded a hit-and-run out­side a bar in the Tower Dis­trict last week­end.

Chase Popps was ar­rested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on Tues­day, po­lice said. He was charged with bat­tery with great bod­ily harm.

Popps, 24, is ac­cused of as­sault­ing John Ro­driquez out­side of Bobby Salazar’s restau­rant early Sun­day morn­ing. Fol­low­ing that as­sault, Ro­driquez stum­bled into Olive Av­enue, where he was hit by a car.

Ro­driquez suf­fered a skull frac­ture, a frac­tured ver­te­bra and other se­ri­ous in­juries, po­lice said.

On Mon­day, the driver of the car, 23-year-old Jes­sica Acu­nia, turned her­self into po­lice. She was ar­rested and charged with felony hit and run, and fail­ure to have a court-or­dered ig­ni­tion in­ter­lock de­vice. She posted bail and was re­leased early Tues­day morn­ing.

Popps has also posted bail, which was set at $25,000.
