Liverpool will mark the 31st anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster on Wednesday with a series of commemorative events after the final Anfield memorial service was postponed as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

The manager, Jürgen Klopp, and club captain Jordan Henderson will deliver personal tributes via Liverpool’s website, while all club staff will observe a minute’s silence in respect of the 96 supporters who were unlawfully killed at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

That includes players who are at home during the lockdown, with the minute’s silence to be held at 3.06pm, the time the semi-final against Nottingham Forest was stopped.

Liverpool will also display a memorial banner inside Anfield and a member of the club’s security staff will lay a wreath at the Hillsborough memorial. Flags will be flown at half-mast at the stadium and across Liverpool, including on the town hall and St George’s Hall, as the city pays its respects. The town hall bells will ring through the deserted city centre.

In the absence of the Anfield memorial service, which will be staged at a later date, families of the victims will hold their own private tributes. ‘96’ signs adorn many windows across the city.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said of the memorial service postponement: “On behalf of the HFSG, I would like to thank everyone for their understanding in this matter. We hope to provide an update in the near future on a rescheduled date for the service.

“I would also ask that you join us in our prayers on April 15, to remember the 96 and keep the families and everyone who has been affected in your thoughts at this difficult time.”
