Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film to open in North American cinemas a day early due to demand
Taylor Swift, the cultural juggernaut known for shattering records, says the documentary film from her billion-dollar Eras concert tour will offer one-day early access showings in the US and Canada.
“Look what you genuinely made me do,” the singer wrote on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday.
“Due to unprecedented demand we’re opening up early access showings of The Eras Tour Concert Film on Thursday in America and Canada. We’re also adding additional showtimes Friday and throughout the weekend,” Swift said.
Previously, Swift had said the movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, would only be released in North America, but it was later announced that it would be screened worldwide.
The film will play in more than 100 countries from 13 October. It was recorded in August over the first three nights the singer played at the SoFi stadium in Los Angeles. Sam Wrench, who directed concert films for Billie Eilish and Lizzo, is at the helm, and it was produced by Taylor Swift Productions.
Coming in at two hours and 45minute, the film’s running time is shorter than Swift’s Eras concert, which takes in 44 songs and is more than three hours long.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour provides movie theatre chains such as AMC Entertainment, Cineplex and Cinemark with a high-profile title to help fill gaps caused by the actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood. Last week, AMC’s shares rose 11% after the company – the film’s official distributor – said advance ticket sales for the concert film had topped US$100m globally.
Earlier this month, Beyoncé announced a new concert film based on the tour for her 2022 album Renaissance. The film will also be distributed direct via the AMC Theatres cinema chain in the US, with the singer set to receive more than 50% of box office grosses.
