FA Cup roundup: Barnsley end Horsham’s run, while Crewe stun Derby
Horsham’s FA Cup dream was ended by League One Barnsley in their firstround replay.
The seventh-tier Isthmian League side faced the Tykes at a sold-out Camping World Community Stadium after holding them to a 3-3 draw at Oakwell. But they got off to the worst possible start when Nicky Cadden fired Barnsley ahead inside three minutes and John McAtee added two more before the interval. Horsham were vastly improved in the second half but Barnsley held firm and will travel to League Two’s bottom side Sutton in the second round.
Slough, from the sixth tier, came unstuck at Grimsby but only after giving the League Two side another scare. The Mariners led through early goals from Rekeil Pyke and Danny Rose but were pegged back to 2-2 by strikes from Tyrese Dyce and David Ogbonna. Pyke put Grimsby back in front before half-time and Arthur Gnahoua’s brace, Alex Hunt and Jamie Andrews wrapped up a 7-2 win for the hosts.
League Two Crewe knocked out League One opposition in the shape of Derby, despite falling behind to Tom Barkhuizen’s fourth-minute goal. Aaron Rowe scored twice to put Crewe ahead and Mickey Demetriou’s header completed a 3-1 win.
Peterborough avoided the same fate, beating League Two Salford on penalties after a rip-roaring 4-4 draw. Curtis Tilt headed City ahead but goals from Joel Randall, Ephron Mason-Clark and Archie Collins put Posh 3-1 up at half-time.
Tilt’s second header and Josh Knight’s own goal pulled the League Two hosts level and Stevie Mallan belted them ahead 14 minutes into extra time. Jonson Clarke-Harris equalised with virtually the last kick of the match to send it to spot-kicks, and Connor McLennan’s effort was saved by Posh keeper Fynn Talley as they won the shoot-out 5-4.
Forest Green dispatched National League North Scarborough Athletic 5-2. They raced into a 4-0 lead after only 35 minutes through Teddy Jenks, Kyle McAllister’s penalty, Jamie Robson and Harvey Bunker. Alex Wiles pulled one back for the visitors but Tyrese Omotoye added a fifth in the second half
before Michael Coulson’s late consolation. Goals in each half from Gavin Massey and Lewis Cass sent Port Vale through 2-0 against Staffordshire rivals Burton. Joe Ironside’s goal in extra time saw Doncaster beat Accrington 2-1 and
York striker Lenell John-Lewis scored twice in a 2-1 win over Chester. York, the only non-league side to win on Tuesday evening, will face 2013 winners Wigan on Friday 1 December.
