Support from Guardian readers broke records in 2023. Help us reach our new goal

-

As the Guardian US was preparing to cover some of the most consequential news events in our lifetimes – including a high-stakes presidential election, a war in the Middle East, and the spiraling climate crisis – we set out to raise $1.5 million to help fund our journalism in 2024.

Guardian readers responded with incredible generosity, helping us blow past our initial fundraising goal ahead of schedule. To readers who have supported us so far, thank you – your contributions will ensure we’re able to cover 2024 with the in-depth reporting we’re known for.

Now, to put us in an even stronger position to report on 2024, we’re raising our fundraising goal to $2 million, our largest year-end goal ever.

This new goal will allow us to go even deeper on the most critical stories of the year, and support our new USbased investigative team. Reader support is increasingly important to the Guardian at a time when revenue from advertisers – historically a major source of financial stability for news publishers – is under pressure. Here are just some of the topics we plan to tackle with the contributions from this year’s fundraiser, per our editor, Betsy Reed: The 2024 election: With the threat of another Trump presidency looming, there are countless angles to cover around next year’s election: extremism, misinformation, reproductive rights, the economy, foreign policy, immigration and even democracy itself. We’ll be there to explain, contextualize and report on it all.

War in the Middle East: Our foreign reporters are on the ground providing urgent reporting on Israel-Palestine, while our US team tracks the upheaval at home.

Technology: We’re entering a new age with artificial intelligence that will have sweeping implications for our society. Our deeply sourced reporting team is poised to tackle this topic with the nimbleness and expertise it requires. The climate crisis: We’re getting ready for another year of record heat, floods, wildfires and other natural disasters. We plan to cover the devastating impact of extreme weather while exposing the forces that are fueling global heating.

Investigations: Our reporters will continue uncovering abuses of power, from money in politics to corporate abuse and more.

In addition to paying for the journalism and the high costs associated with reporting, the Guardian’s readerfunded model allows us to remain independent and free from the influence of a billionaire owner or shareholders and keep our website paywall-free and accessible to all, regardless of your ability to pay.

But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Naomi Klein recently said about the Guardian: “In a time of raging information wars – waged by nation-states, political parties and attention-economy grifters – the Guardian doesn’t treat news and information as a weapon of war,” Klein wrote in her column. “Instead, it treats it as a right that all people deserve, regardless of whether or not they can afford to pay, one that transcends nationhood, partisanship and profit.”

There’s a lot to report on in the next year – and with your help, we can cover the biggest stories shaping America. We hope you’ll join the hundreds of readers who have supported us so far and help us start 2024 strong.
