Boubacar Kamara suffers ‘significant knee ligament injury’, say Aston Villa

-

Aston Villa have revealed midfielder Boubacar Kamara suffered a “significant knee ligament injury” against Manchester United.

The 24-year-old sustained the problem in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Villa Park and was replaced in the 65th minute by Moussa Diaby. A club statement on Monday read: “Aston Villa can confirm Boubacar Kamara has suffered a significant knee ligament injury. The midfielder sustained the damage during yesterday’s fixture with Manchester United and has subsequently undergone a scan this morning. Kamara’s condition will be reviewed ahead of a further consultation with a knee specialist.”

There are fears that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. If confirmed by scans, it would put the rest of Kamara’s season and his hopes of representing France at this summer’s

European Championship in jeopardy. Kamara has been an integral part of Unai Emery’s side this season, making 30 appearances in central midfield in all competitions, including starting all 20 of the Premier League games he has been available for. He has five caps for France.

Kamara is the second Villa player to suffer a knee injury in consecutive weeks after the defender Ezri Konsa was forced off in their 5-0 win over Sheffield United.

Meanwhile, Leon Bailey has signed a new contract at the club. The 26-yearold Jamaica international has extended his stay, having initially moved to Villa Park from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.

Bailey has scored seven goals in 21 appearances this season to help Emery’s side mount an unexpected top-four challenge. In total, the former Genk winger has scored 16 goals in 87 appearances for Villa – and he provided the assist for Douglas Luiz in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.
