Championship roundup: Ipswich strike late to go third as Southampton lose
Omari Hutchinson scored a stoppagetime winner as Ipswich edged a sevengoal thriller against bottom side Rotherham in the Championship.
Tom Eaves fired the visitors in front within two minutes at Portman Road, but Ipswich quickly equalised through Wes Burns and looked on course for a comfortable win thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Burns again.
Hakeem Odoffin pulled one back on the hour mark and Rotherham equalised in brilliant style in stoppage time courtesy of a Panenka penalty from Cafú, only for Hutchinson to fire home the winner seconds later.
The win lifted Ipswich above Southampton to third in the table after Saints suffered their first home defeat since mid-September against Hull.
Anass Zaroury put the visitors in front after Gavin Bazunu could only parry Jaden Philogene’s shot and Philogene then slipped in Fábio Carvalho to make it 2-0 after Southampton were caught trying to play out from the back. The substitute Joe Aribo pulled one back late on but Hull held on for the win to move back into the playoff places.
West Brom remain a point above Hull following a 3-0 win at Plymouth, Cedric Kipre breaking the deadlock from close range in the 61st minute following a lacklustre first half.
Mikey Johnston doubled his side’s lead with a superb curling strike before Tom Fellows completed the scoring in stoppage time. Cardiff and Blackburn played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Meanwhile in League One, late goals from Lewis Wing and Harvey Knibbs saw Reading win 2-0 in their rearranged fixture against Port Vale. Last month’s meeting was abandoned after Reading supporters staged a pitch invasion in protest against the ownership of Dai Yongge, with the club receiving a suspended three-point penalty as a result.
But Rubén Sellés’ side ensured they would not let another three points slip away, scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to ease themselves away from the relegation places while consigning Port Vale to a fourth successive away defeat.
