WILKES-BARRE — Several hundred people braved freezing temperatures Saturday to participate in the Two Mountains Medieval Winter Fun Day at Kirby Park.

The annual event, organized by the Northeast Pennsylvania Council of the Boy Scouts of America, was held from 10a.m.to2p.m.

“Last year it was a dinosaur theme, and this year it was medieval,” said Carmen Ciampi, vice chairman of programming for the Two Mountains District, which has scouts throughout the Wyoming Valley. “So it’s really just a good event for the kids to come out and have a good time and get ready for summer camp — Cub Scout camp — because this is actu- ally the theme for camp also.”

The event was expected to draw between 400 and 500 people throughout the day, he said.

Webelos scouts participated in an outdoors challenge competition, testing their skills in areas such as shelter building and knot-tying.

For other young scouts, organizers set up stations with games and activities including shots, bowling, shooting paper sling- plate shield-making, javelin throw- ing, horseback jousting and blind volleyball, Ciampi said.

“It’s just a good day to get the kids out in the park and have a good time,” Crew 461 Adviser Sheila Bender said.

Although the day was cold, the weather stayed dry for the event.

“Actually it’s nice,” Bender said. frozen “I’m up. glad We’ve the ground done is it before where it has been really muddy, and we’ve done it when there’s been lots of snow and ice. So this is really a good day. A little cold, but if you’re running around it’s warm.”

Sharon Kalinchok, of Conyngham, went to the event with her granddaughter Gabby, who is involved with Pack 781 in Mountain Top. Gabby was busy Saturday morning attempting to catch metal fish with a magnetized fishing pole.

“She’s having a great time with all of her other scouts,” Kalinchok said. “It’s cold, but I’m getting through it. That’s what grandmothers do.”
