MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE: The annual Valentine’s Dance will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The dance is a fundraiser for Student Council that goes toward the students’ field trip. Tickets are $5 and will be sold in school from Wednesday to Friday and at the door. Semi-formal dress is required. A dance contract must be signed and returned to your homeroom teacher in order to attend.
DOODLE4GOOGLE: The eighth-grade students will be participating in the “Doodle4Google” contest this year. This is a nationwide contest in which Google searches for its next best design that will be displayed for a day. There will be 53 state and territory winners, four national winners and one overall. The prizes are outstanding, with the first prize being a $30,000 scholarship. The topic this year is “When I grow up, I hope ...”
DOUGHNUT SALE: Valley PTA is once again sponsoring a “Doughnut Day” sale. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are selling for $8 a dozen. All orders are due no later than Feb. 19 with payment. No exceptions. Payment must be in the form of a check or money order payable to Valley PTA. Delivery is March 4. Arrangements must be made to pick up orders between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day. ‘STELLAR’ GIFTED
NEWS: When Valley gifted students look up at Mars in the night sky, they see more than the red planet. Their names were etched on a silicon microchip that was carried to Mars by the NASA spacecraft Insight. The craft, designed to study the interior of the planet, landed on the surface of Mars in November. Students who participated in the program were given a boarding pass printed with their names and 301 million frequent flyer points. ‘SCIENCE IN MOTION’:
Eighth-grade gifted students from three school districts, Hazleton Area, Crestwood, and Weatherly Area, recently met at Valley Elementary/ Middle School for an exciting opportunity. Instructors from Wilkes University brought their “Science in Motion” program to the school. The students participated in a forensics workshop and used science to solve a crime. They learned about blood types, how to identify a substance by its melting point and how to perform color chromatography. BASKETBALL GAMES:

We will have school Friday due to the snow day Nov. 16. PROGRAMS: The thirdgrade students of Valley Elementary will have a program Feb. 19 about Abraham Lincoln.
BOX TOPS: Remember to clip your box tops labels and send them into school with your child. Every month, the PTA collects the names of everyone who brought in box tops and randomly selects one student to receive a certificate and a prize.
