MID­DLE SCHOOL DANCE: The an­nual Valen­tine’s Dance will be held Fri­day from 6 to 8 p.m. The dance is a fundraiser for Stu­dent Coun­cil that goes to­ward the stu­dents’ field trip. Tick­ets are $5 and will be sold in school from Wed­nes­day to Fri­day and at the door. Semi-for­mal dress is re­quired. A dance con­tract must be signed and re­turned to your home­room teacher in or­der to at­tend.

DOODLE4GOOGLE: The eighth-grade stu­dents will be par­tic­i­pat­ing in the “Doodle4Google” con­test this year. This is a na­tion­wide con­test in which Google searches for its next best de­sign that will be dis­played for a day. There will be 53 state and ter­ri­tory win­ners, four na­tional win­ners and one over­all. The prizes are out­stand­ing, with the first prize be­ing a $30,000 schol­ar­ship. The topic this year is “When I grow up, I hope ...”

DOUGH­NUT SALE: Val­ley PTA is once again spon­sor­ing a “Dough­nut Day” sale. Krispy Kreme dough­nuts are sell­ing for $8 a dozen. All or­ders are due no later than Feb. 19 with pay­ment. No ex­cep­tions. Pay­ment must be in the form of a check or money or­der payable to Val­ley PTA. De­liv­ery is March 4. Ar­range­ments must be made to pick up or­ders be­tween 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day. ‘STEL­LAR’ GIFTED

NEWS: When Val­ley gifted stu­dents look up at Mars in the night sky, they see more than the red planet. Their names were etched on a sil­i­con mi­crochip that was car­ried to Mars by the NASA space­craft In­sight. The craft, de­signed to study the in­te­rior of the planet, landed on the sur­face of Mars in Novem­ber. Stu­dents who par­tic­i­pated in the pro­gram were given a board­ing pass printed with their names and 301 mil­lion fre­quent flyer points. ‘SCI­ENCE IN MO­TION’:

Eighth-grade gifted stu­dents from three school dis­tricts, Ha­zle­ton Area, Crest­wood, and Weatherly Area, re­cently met at Val­ley El­e­men­tary/ Mid­dle School for an ex­cit­ing op­por­tu­nity. In­struc­tors from Wilkes Uni­ver­sity brought their “Sci­ence in Mo­tion” pro­gram to the school. The stu­dents par­tic­i­pated in a foren­sics workshop and used sci­ence to solve a crime. They learned about blood types, how to iden­tify a sub­stance by its melt­ing point and how to per­form color chro­matog­ra­phy. BAS­KET­BALL GAMES:

We will have school Fri­day due to the snow day Nov. 16. PRO­GRAMS: The third­grade stu­dents of Val­ley El­e­men­tary will have a pro­gram Feb. 19 about Abra­ham Lin­coln.

BOX TOPS: Re­mem­ber to clip your box tops la­bels and send them into school with your child. Ev­ery month, the PTA col­lects the names of ev­ery­one who brought in box tops and ran­domly se­lects one stu­dent to re­ceive a cer­tifi­cate and a prize.
