To get to the four-team Wyoming Valley Conference boys’ basketball playoffs, Hazleton Area will need to win a playoff.

Against rival Crestwood.

The Cougars (15-6 overall) and Comets will renew their rivalry on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at King’s College, WilkesBarre. At stake will be the WVC Division 1 championship and an automatic berth in the conference’s first postseason tournament.

While Hazleton Area must win to advance, Crestwood (18-4) may be able to move on even if the Comets lose because their District 2 rating points may be high enough for them to qualify.

The Comets and Cougars split their two regular-season meets; each winning on its home floor. Both teams also lost home conference games to Dallas.

Nanticoke (17-5) and GAR (15-7) will battle for the Division 2 title Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at King’s. That winner also will punch its ticket to the conference tournament; while the loser must wait until the District 2 tournament to play again.

Division 3 championWyoming Seminary (202) already is guaranteed the top seed for the WVC tournament. D3 runnerup Holy Redeemer also may qualify based on its district rating points pending the outcome of Tuesday’s games.

If the Hazleton AreaCrestwood game is postponed Tuesday, it will be a single game Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Berwick A Nanticoke-GAR postponement would switch that game to Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Pittston Area.

The conference semifinals, are scheduled for Friday at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Dallas High School and the championship game will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hazleton Area’s Hughie McGeehan Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, the WVC girls’ semifinals are all but set. Division 1 champ-Hazleton Area will face Berwick, the Division 2 runner-up and wild card in the opener of doubleheader on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Holy Redeemer High School, Wilkes-Barre. Holy Redeemer and Wyoming Seminary will meet in the 7:30 nightcap.

Thursday’s winners will play for the overall title on Saturday at 6 p.m. at McGeehan Gymnasium.
