Sand­gren, Nor­rie to meet in Auck­land fi­nal

Ten­nys Sand­gren is head­ing to the Australian Open in ca­reer-best form af­ter beat­ing Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2 to reach the ASB Clas­sic fi­nal on Fri­day in Auck­land, New Zealand.

In Sat­ur­day’s fi­nal he will face Bri­tish wild card Cameron Nor­rie, who reached his first ATP fi­nal by de­feat­ing Jan-Len­nard Struff 7-5. 4-6, 6-3.

Nor­rie, a two-time Al­lAmer­i­can at TCU, was born in South Africa and plays for Bri­tain but was raised in Auck­land and con­sid­ers it his home­town.

Ho­bart In­ter­na­tional:

Amer­i­can Sofia Kenin ad­vanced Fi­nals in Ho­bart, Aus­tralia, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Al­ize Cor­net. Kenin will play Anna Karolina Sch­miedlova, who Belinda Ben­cic 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2 in an ear­lier semi­fi­nal.

Syd­ney In­ter­na­tional:

Ash­leigh Barty con­tin­ued her strong run at the Syd­ney In­ter­na­tional with a semi­fi­nal win over Kiki Bertens, beat­ing the Dutch player 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5. She will play two-time Wim­ble­don cham­pion Pe­tra Kvi­tova or Ser­bian qual­i­fier Ali­ak­san­dra Sas­novich in Sat­ur­day’s fi­nal.

Gor­don Smith, long­time CEO and ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor of the U.S. Ten­nis As­so­ci­a­tion, will re­tire at the end of the 2019 af­ter 12 years on the job. Un­der Smith, the na­tional gov­ern­ing body fin­ished the five-year, $600 mil­lion trans­for­ma­tion of the USTA Bil­lie Jean King Na­tional Ten­nis Cen­ter. That in­cluded two new sta­di­ums plus a re­tractable roof over Arthur Ashe Sta­dium.
