School’s in session for new ‘Mean Girls’
An updated take on a beloved high school comedy tops the DVD releases for the week of April 23.
“Mean Girls”: An adaptation of the musical based on the 2004 film, starring Angourie Rice as Cady Heron and Reneé Rapp as Regina George.
“There’s a lot of fun onscreen in this ‘Mean Girls’ … but it also feels like a condensed skim of the story and the movie’s greatest hits,” writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. “It’s more of a musical addendum to the original ‘Mean Girls’ than it is own stand-alone project.”

“Moon Knight: Season 1”: Oscar Isaac plays a mild-mannered Brit who’s also a ruthless mercenary who’s also a masked crime fighter of mystical origin in this Marvel series.
“Impulse”: A journalist discovers a conspiracy involving political and Hollywood elite while investigating seemingly unrelated murders.
“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”: This Paramount+ drama from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan stars David Oyelowo as the titular frontier lawman, one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals in the Old West.
“Marmalade”: A romantic crime caper that starts with a man telling his life story to a fellow cellmate in a bid for his help escaping.
“Sweet Dreams”: Johnny Knoxville stars as a recovering addict who agrees to coach the household softball team while at a sober living facility.
“The Promised Land”: This drama follows an 18th-century Danish army captain (Mads Mikkelsen) as he attempts to cultivate the wild heath in Jutland, Denmark.
“What Rhymes With Reason”: Teen drama about a group of youths looking for a mythical place purported to be in the nearby wilderness.
“Dogfight”: Director Nancy Savoca’s 1991 film about a group of young men trying to seduce the ugliest women possible before leaving for Vietnam joins the Criterion Collection ranks. Stars River Phoenix and Lili Taylor.
